What prompts families to seek support when a loved one starts showing signs of dementia?

At our recent Open Day, we explored the early experiences that lead families to look for help. Subtle changes in behaviour, the delicate balance between care and independence, and the importance of timely support were key themes.

Every family’s journey is different, but one thing is clear: support must be accessible, relevant, and responsive.

Matt shares more reflections and insights in his latest blog. We’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences too.

How do we support family members with dementia? 🫂

In these cold months, it’s vital to understand how weather can impact the well-being of people affected by dementia. Extreme temperatures—whether hot or cold—can exacerbate symptoms like confusion, agitation, and restlessness.

To support our loved ones, ensure they stay hydrated during hot weather and avoid diuretics like caffeine and sugary drinks. In cold months, maintain a well-lit environment to reduce confusion caused by darkness and shadows. Regular check-ins are essential to monitor their comfort and safety in varying weather conditions.

Supporting Loved Ones Through Moments of Confusion💜

Dementia affects millions worldwide, not just patients but also families and carers. Moments of confusion can be challenging, for everyone involved. Here are five strategies that can help reorient your loved one gently and effectively.

1️⃣Stay Calm and Reassuring
Your tone matters. Speak softly, maintain eye contact, and use positive body language to reduce anxiety.

2️⃣Help Reorient Them
Gently remind them of where they are and who you are. For example, say, “Hi Mum, it’s me, Sarah. You’re at home in your favourite chair.” Pair this with a reassuring touch or gesture to reinforce the connection.

3️⃣Focus on Familiar Cues
Use objects, photos, or settings that are familiar to the person. A favourite chair, family pictures, or even the smell of their favourite meal can bring comfort.

4️⃣Redirect with Compassion
If reorienting feels distressing, try redirecting their attention to a different activity or topic. A walk, a cup of tea, or a conversation about a happy memory can work wonders.

5️⃣Keep It Simple and Be Patient
Ask or answer with short, clear phrases. Complex explanations may overwhelm or frustrate them. It’s okay to repeat yourself. Frustration won’t help the situation, but patience will foster trust and comfort.

Dementia affects everyone differently so it's important to communicate in a way that is right for the person. Listen carefully and think about what you're going to say and how you'll say it. You can also communicate meaningfully without using spoken words.
