Takedown poleaxe, this was a challenge getting everything to fit snugly but able to come apart is no mean feat between wood and forged steel parts. It turned out great though at 6ft long being able to remove the butt spike and head makes it slightly easier to transport in the modern world. Ask me to do another one though and I will protest, one piece is best šŸ˜…

Wow it’s been a while!
I’m always working on something but here we have a very special project I finished a few months back and has now been presented to its new owner, I wonder if any of you recognise the inspiration for this very odd looking rondel dagger, the front rondel is hollow and the pommel is riveted through to enable the tang to protrude out the back to a second sharp point.

Nice and simple this week, the oldest tool a sharp stick. This was a spear head I forged probably 12 months ago as some practice in forge welding sockets, tidying the workshop up this week in between commissions that I can’t show yet I took a day to clean the spear head up and forge a butt cap and mount it all on ash 6foot length perfect for guarding doors!

Something I’ve wanted to make for ages, a medieval crossbow, a rolling nut design every part made by myself draws around 115kg/250lbs on its steel prod all mounted on an ash tiller, there’s a lot to learn and making this has helped me understand how these contraptions work and what I can do to improve on my next one

If you find yourself against a heavily armoured companion half swording is the go too. Master Fiore expanded on this with a variety of specialised armoured fighting swords in his manuscripts this example has a large notched area in the blade to grip and only the section after this half grip is sharpened, add to that a dangerous pommel spike and sharp heat treated quillons for digging into plate and mail for control is this the perfect armoured fighting sword?

Look at this for a carving knife! hand forged 300plus layered Damascus integral bolster with an African Blackwood handle and a dark moody etch!
I enjoyed this one I haven’t forged any Damascus out in a while so I took the opportunity to make up a few billets up with this one so keep an eye out for some more patterned projects coming this year ā˜ŗļø

Now we move into a new year I can share this Christmas present project completed last year, a longsword blunt designed specifically for armoured half sword fighting the blade has a recessed area near the tip to use as a dedicated hand hold, I’ve never seen an example with a leather wrap on the blade but I liked the look of it and coupled with the fact it can be removed easily enough if the new owner isn’t a fan I thought it was worth the extra effort.

I’d love to do more commission work in 2026 so if I can help you out with your own piece of history please let me know!

As we come to the end of another year I look back at what I’ve achieved in my work this year and although it has been a quiet year for commissions it has allowed me time to build my skills in areas that I choose and I’m happy with my progress along this creative path, there has been a shocking lack of polearms this year though perhaps in 2026 we can both work to remedy this!

I hope everyone enjoys the days ahead and Santa is good to you, please enjoy some of my favourite pieces of the year 😘

TLDR Merry Christmas!

Thanks Tom for the great review on your new Falchion,
If any of my previous customers have some nice words about my work I’d love to hear them thanks!

I purchased a Falchion from Blue Dog Forge on the 7th of November, 2025. The communication with David was superb, clear and friendly. I was provided with measurements, the point of balance, and several images before purchasing the Falchion. Dave made it clear I was able to pay in installments and I paid it off in two, the price was very reasonable given the high quality of the item. It was packaged incredibly well and arrived in perfect condition.Ā

It is surprisingly light in hand and more nimble than I expected it to be. It arrived sharp as a razor, I will definitely be looking to Dave at Blue Dog Forge again, frankly I’m impressed.
