Dodging the rain this week for the firm.

Another new cabin base. This one required some more thought as the area was banked up to the neighbour. We cleared the vegetation, dug the bank away for the required space, installed hardcore base, reinforcing mesh and concreted. Then once dry, installed a retaining wall to keep the shape of the bank for Mr and Mrs B in Great Baddow.

Ms T in High Roding lost her lounge lights, we eventually tracked back the wiring and found this lot behind the hot water tank. Fault was a snapped neutral in the switch cable. Cable replaced and all remedial work undertaken.

Sadly this tenant dropped their bottle of Old Spice in the shower making a nice hole in the tub of this rental property. So emergency job required, of course taking out the old bath took most of the bathroom with it. New bath, new boarding, new shower, new tiling.

Trouble with wind?

A week full of repairs this week for Wicks Construction & Engineering

Wind damage had caused the aerial in the pictures below to go over as well as dislodge all the brickwork and tiles. It was all dismantled, the brickwork and tiles relayed. Two disused aerials were removed to lower the wind resistance, before reinstalling on a bracket with a bigger spread, further down the wall so there is more weight above.

Another repair to a garage where the wind had got behind a false upvc ceiling.

And a heritage job. The workshop has produced another set of hardwood timber windows for a listed building in Felsted. These have been fitted this week and we are now in the process of repairing the apatures before redecorating both inside and out.

The only leaks I'll allow are on my allotment! Roofing repair this afternoon. Galvanised tin instead of lead, no cascade over the tile, disintegrated fillet allowing water straight under tiles and broken tiles.
We completely striped all of this old flashing, raked out the mortar joints, installed new code 4 lead. The old tin had nothing holding it in and only about 10mm of joint.
The new lead, we held in place the old fashioned way with lead plugs. Sand and cement never adheres to lead, so this time we used a modern lead glue to adhere it in place and seal each joint.
Once this is all cured we will be back to repoint the chimney.
Broken tiles replaced and new lead work now cascades over tiles.

Early emergency call this morning.
Power was intermittently coming on and off, nothing tripping on the fuseboard but there was a buzzing sound.
My predictions were correct, a poorly fitted wiring circuit and mcb. The termination screw was loose on initial inspection. Once removing the cables you can see the blackening to the cables and enough heat to melt them together. A loose contact, generates heat from the circuit keep being made and then broken. This can quiet easily cause a fire. On further inspection, more terminal screws were loose and one mcb was broken.
A big firm in Chelmsford had fitted this CU poorly.

Another extension by the team. A little harder than normal as we built this across the wettest spring on record and it was built to a very tight budget.
