'We recently had the opportunity to work with RACS on a complex fibre optic cable installation project for a high-profile client. The third ISO accreditation that we hold is ISO 45001 - Occupational Health and Safety.

It sits alongside our ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, which cover quality management and environmental impact management.

In other words, if ISO 9001 is about quality, and ISO 14001 is about our responsibility to the environment, 45001 is all about the people.

It protects the health, safety and wellbeing of workers, and it means we follow a framework to identify and control health and safety risks, reduce the potential for accidents and ill health, and keep improving our safety performance.

For a company like RACS Industrial, which works at height, in confined spaces, and on high-risk industrial sites, this standard is an important and structured commitment to making sure every technician can work safely throughout each job.

Cutting corners preparing for work on a high-risk site is unlikely to save time completing the job. It is more likely to contribute to the work taking longer.

It can happen across all industry sectors; when at the planning stage, deliverables and task specific site documents are rushed to meet a deadline. The start of the work will start slow - supervisors are confused by the lack of detail in the method statement, work teams aren’t properly briefed. Site equipment and materials become disorganised.

When this happens, the client may have to allow for additional time for the job to be completed, which can slow down other trades or delay client production. Overall, there is a high chance of disruption to the client’s programme.

Not only that, but this can become a financial risk to the (un-prepared) supplier. Extra wages to cover further site attendance, lack of tools for other scopes etc. Spending more overall than the original cost should have been.

On other occasions, the risk assessment was not completed thoroughly, and elements were missed. When the work environment changed, it wasn’t accounted for properly, and there was an incident.

Rework costs more than doing it right and thoroughly the first time. Not just in money, but in downtime, in reputational damage, and in risk to the people on site.

At RACS Industrial, the planning, the preparation, and the standards we hold ourselves to aren't there to slow things down. They're there because we know our clients are at risk by us not implementing these vital steps at the initial stages of a project.

We have tried and tested systems to make sure our clients' projects are completed safely, thoroughly, and all safety aspects are accounted for from the planning stage through to completion.

Our professional standards sit at the core of our work as a company at RACS Industrial.

For us, a key element of the client experience is leaving the site right, so that our work fits seamlessly into their project, asset maintenance programme, or operational plant area, at any stage.

Every time we finish client work, the standard of what's left behind reflects what we stand for.

We make sure the site is tidy, kept in order, the relevant paperwork is signed, and all assets are treated with care and respect.

Because of this, our work in high-risk environments and on complex assets means our clients trust us to work responsibly, and leave the site in the condition it should be, the paperwork is in order, and the client is fully informed.

A clean handover isn't a courtesy. For us, it is a core part of the job.

We put a lot of work and consideration into the details when we prepare for projects, because these details are vital for ensuring safety, and making sure work is completed to the highest standard.

Our work and services are extensive, and so are the types of industries we work with.

One of these industries is marine, where our underdeck access platforms and easel configured tripods enable us to carry out inspections and maintenance works to marine assets like port infrastructure, vessels, and jetties.

We travel around the UK for these projects, and they are as exciting for us as they are interesting, always making sure we carry out the work using the safest and most effective systems.

Did you know, we take on industrial coating projects too, as part of our asset maintenance services?

We work in a variety of sectors, with a capability portfolio of services that brings real value to our clients.

A client at a COMAH registered site needed a pipe bridge (or pipe rack) brought back up to scratch as part of their ongoing maintenance programme.

This is where we came in!

The project was a little more complex than previous industrial painting tasks we have completed, as the work area sat within an ATEX controlled (hazardous) zone. Meaning the environment is potentially explosive, and any ignition source would be a serious hazard.

Before we started any work, we completed thorough risk and CoSHH assessments to make sure the work area was safe to work within and chemical exposure to our technicians was minimised. It accounted for everything on the project, the tools, the approach, and the products in use.

All steel surface preparation was done via non mechanical hand tools to ST2 standard. We avoided using any power tools, to make sure we were fully compliant with ATEX controls whilst still achieving a well-prepped surface.

From there, we applied a three coat Sherwin-Williams coating system, over Navy Steel (aka Blue Steel) as an effective rust inhibitor for those tough spots!

We allocated a three-person rope access team to the job, and completed the project within a total of 8 shifts, leaving the client with a pipe bridge that was both maintained, protected and looked the part too!
