Support our fire crews this summer - Sat 5th September St Austell Community Fire Station Open Day

It's been an incredibly busy summer for Cornwall's firefighters.

With wildfires and other incidents keeping crews on their toes across the county, we'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone in Cornwall Fire & Rescue Service for everything they do. Recent incidents have included multiple wildfires across Bodmin Moor, West Penwith and near St Austell during the hot, dry weather.

Many people don't realise that behind every emergency response is hours of training.

We're proud to support our local fire crews by providing opportunities for training here at the yard whenever it's needed. Hopefully the skills practised here are never neededβ€”but if they are, we know they'll make a difference.

If you'd like to support the crews who have been out there this summer, this Saturday September 5th St Austell Community Fire Station are holding their open day. 10am - 3pm!
- the first ever St Austell Fire Station dog show
- music from the amazing Maids of Melody and St Dennis ukulele band!
- Yummy food, lots of exciting demonstrations and chances to try things for yourself!

It's a great time of year to be a classic vehicle enthusiast in Cornwall. πŸš—πŸšœ

From beautifully restored classic cars to magnificent steam engines and vintage tractors, August is packed with events celebrating the engineering and craftsmanship of years gone by.

If you're planning a day out, here are a few dates for the diary:

πŸš‚ 14–16 August – West of England Great Steam Engine Rally, Stithians Showground (celebrating its 70th anniversary)

πŸš— 20 August – Fowey Classic Car Show & Parade as part of Fowey Royal Regatta

🚜 29–30 August – Wadebridge Classic & Vintage Vehicle Rally at the Royal Cornwall Events Centre

At Henry Orchard & Sons, we spend our days recycling metal, but we also appreciate the history, skill and care that goes into keeping classic vehicles on the road. Whether it's a vintage tractor, a beautifully restored saloon or a steam engine that's been lovingly maintained for generations, they're all part of Cornwall's rich engineering heritage.

If you're heading along to any of these events, we'd love to know which one's your favourite!

πŸ“‹ Digital Waste Tracking is coming – is your business ready?

From 1 October 2026, new Digital Waste Tracking requirements will become mandatory for permitted waste receiving sites in England, with further stages of the rollout following for other parts of the waste industry.

The aim is to move to a modern digital waste system, making it easier to trace waste from where it's produced through to where it's recycled.

If you're a builder, farmer, engineer, manufacturer or any business producing scrap metal, it's worth understanding what these changes mean.

The good news? When you recycle your metal with Henry Orchard & Sons, we'll continue to help with the what is required and give you a full audit trail, helping you to meet your duty of care requirements.

As a fully licensed metal recycler with decades of experience, we've always believed that good service doesn't stop at the weighbridge. Whether it's a one-off load or regular collections, we'll help make sure you are compliant and confident that your metal is being recycled responsibly.

If you'd like to find out how these changes could affect your business, we'd be happy to help.

β˜€οΈ Summer's in full swing β€” and so are we.

While Cornwall fills up with visitors making the most of the beaches and the sunshine, things are busy as ever at Methrose Works near St Austell. This is actually one of our most popular times of year for domestic clearouts, building projects and agricultural tidy-ups β€” and our team are ready to help.

Whatever you've got β€” old copper pipe from a renovation, greenhouse frames from the garden, a redundant bit of farm kit, a van full of mixed metal from a building project β€” bring it in and we'll weigh it up, give you a fair price and make sure everything is recycled responsibly.

What you get at Henry Orchard & Sons:

βœ” Fair, honest prices β€” we'll always tell you straight
βœ” A safe, friendly site with room for vans and trailers
βœ” A team happy to help with the heavy stuff
βœ” Proper, licensed recycling β€” paperwork and all
βœ” The option to donate your payment to Cornwall Air Ambulance, Children's Hospice South West or Cornwall Hospice Care

Henry Orchard & Sons, St Austell β€” Cornwall's most trusted scrap metal merchant since 1947.

πŸš— Your car's last journey deserves to be handled properly.

Every vehicle reaches the end of the road eventually. When yours does, what happens next matters more than most people realise.

At Henry Orchard & Sons we're a DVLA-registered End of Life Vehicle (ELV) treatment facility, which means your old motor is handled to the proper legal standard: fluids drained and disposed of safely, hazardous components removed, usable parts recovered, and the remaining metal recycled responsibly.

You also receive a Certificate of Destruction β€” important for removing the vehicle from DVLA records and protecting you from any future liability.

This isn't just about ticking a box. Improperly scrapped vehicles can leak engine oil, coolant, battery acid and brake fluid into the ground. Doing it right is better for Cornwall's environment, and it's a legal requirement.

Whether it's a car that's failed its MOT, an old van that's been sitting for years, or a vehicle that's been in an accident, bring it to us at Methrose Works near St Austell and we'll take it from there.

Henry Orchard & Sons β€” giving Cornwall's vehicles a responsible final chapter since 1947. πŸš—

♻️ July is Plastic Free July β€” and metal has something to say about that.

Every year millions of people take on the Plastic Free July challenge, cutting out single-use plastics from their daily lives. It's a brilliant movement and we're right behind it.

So here's a thought. While the world is β€” rightly β€” focused on plastic, metal deserves its moment too. Because unlike plastic, which degrades in quality every time it's recycled and can only go around the loop a handful of times before it's done, metal is genuinely infinite. Recycle a steel can today and that same steel could come back as a car part, a wind turbine, or a ship's hull β€” and be recycled again and again indefinitely, with no loss in quality whatsoever.

So this July, while you're saying no to single-use plastic, think about how you can replace those plastic water bottles and coffee cups with a metal ones, but also bring in that metal sitting idle in your garage, shed or yard. Old tools, bed frames, copper pipe, broken garden furniture β€” bring it to us and give it a genuinely limitless future.

Henry Orchard & Sons, St Austell β€” keeping Cornwall's metal in its best possible loop since 1947. ♻️

πŸ„ The Stithians Show is just around the corner!

Cornwall's biggest one-day agricultural show rolls into Stithians this Monday 13th July, and it's one of those days that reminds you exactly why living in Cornwall is so special. Livestock, vintage vehicles, live music, local food, and more β€” it's a proper day out for all the family.

We always love Stithians week. It's the kind of event that brings together the farming community, local businesses, and families from right across the Duchy.

If you're going along, keep an eye out on the vintage vehicle displays β€” there's always something spectacular. And if you're a farmer or rural business thinking about upgrading machinery or clearing out equipment after the show, you know where we are. Old tractors, farm machinery, metal equipment β€” we'll give you a fair price and make sure everything is recycled properly and responsibly.

Have a fantastic day out, Cornwall. We hope the sun shines. β˜€οΈ

Henry Orchard & Sons, St Austell β€” here for the Cornish farming community since 1947.
