Preserving history while shaping a new chapter is always an exciting challenge.

Over a period of time, our team transformed a Grade II listed home in Cranbrook, beginning with the conversion of a garage into a beautiful annexe before undertaking a full renovation of the main house.

Working closely with the Architect and Conservation officer, we modernised and adapted the property while carefully preserving its historic fabric. Every decision was guided by our client’s vision of custodianship and evolving the home sensitively, with respect for its past and promise for the future.

This country home in Groombridge had a good rear elevation but very little connection to the garden behind it.

The solution was a single-storey rear extension with a zinc standing seam roof in pigmento grey, full-height sliding glazed doors across the back of the house, and a new open-plan kitchen and living space that opens directly onto the garden terrace.

The zinc roof was the defining material choice. It reads as clearly modern without competing with the original farmhouse, and takes the light differently at different times of day.

This building dates to 1510.

At its heart is a historic barn, and above the roofline, a clock tower whose original mechanism was carefully removed, entrusted to a skilled horologist for restoration, and returned to exactly where it belongs.

The full refurbishment of the main house and annexe involved bespoke oak joinery to every door, staircase and window, a sandblasted feature wall opening the original building fabric to view, exposed beams retained throughout, and contemporary Crittall-style glazing introduced to the annexe.

Five centuries of history. Handled with care.

This extension to a traditional oast house in Tunbridge Wells is one of our favourites.

The brief was to introduce a contemporary addition that could hold its own alongside one of Kent's most distinctive building forms. The answer was vertical T&G cedar cladding, aluminium windows and doors, and a Westwood Wecryl roofing system - clean, considered, and confident without competing with the oast.

Inside, a completely new open-plan kitchen and living space connects directly to the garden through full-width glazed doors, bringing light and flow to the whole ground floor.

A closer look inside reveals the finer details that define this renovation.

Bespoke joinery, bold bathroom design, and the careful restoration of centuries-old timber bring richness and texture to every corner. Whether it’s the statement copper bath, hand-made joinery staircase, or the layered tones of exposed brick and oak, each detail was crafted with the same precision.

More from our recently shared Lamberhurst build...

This Eco-home combines performance and craftsmanship throughout - whilst standing the test of time. The oak-framed solar glass façade floods the interior with natural light while supporting the home's low energy design.

Inside, bespoke joinery and a beautifully crafted spiral staircase bring warmth and personality to the space. Meanwhile, the air source heat pump, solar PV and, full heat recovery system ensure exceptional efficiency and year-round comfort.

Traditional elements such as the wood-burning stove and shaped timber fascia root the home in its rural setting, blending modern living with timeless detail.

From every angle, this historic home is a story of custodianship.

Our work on this Grade II listed property extended far beyond the interiors, respecting the distinctive façade, traditional joinery and handmade brickwork that give the house its character. New boundary walls, gates and exterior detailing were introduced with the same sensitivity, designed to sit seamlessly within the original setting.

The result is a home that feels timeless, blending preservation with subtle evolution for the generations to come.
