I often find that businesses can tweak their product or service offering to create more revenue.

Let's talk 'Value-added services'.
These services can justify higher pricing. Look at what additional services you can offer that provide value to your clients and complement your core offering For example, training (121, webinars or group), downloadable guides, advisory services, offering bespoke reports, writing a strategy or a package for ongoing support on a retainer basis.

These types of add-ons increase revenue per client and boost your gross margin while delivering a service that people genuinely need. Win win.

What do we need for success in a service led business? Yes, customers!
And not only do we need customers now - we need an on-going funnel of customer leads. 'Warm' leads or strong leads i.e. people who already know a little about our business and how we operate so they already feel familiar with the offering and some degree of awareness that they might want it! Then we can convert our warm leads into actual transactions.

I thought I would share what has worked for me with my health and safety business:
📱 Driving traffic to our website through both Google and Microsoft Pay-Per-Click ads.
👨‍💻 Continuously improving our SEO to enhance our organic search ranking on Google.
👥 Networking through groups which have proven successful for us e.g. Chamber of Commerce and BNI.
📑Creating useful content and hosting webinars that showcase the business services we offer.
📍 Providing free templates and tools to engage potential clients.
🆕 Regularly following up with our contact list by sharing valuable insights, content, and routine offers.
👋 Reaching out to our highly targeted list of ideal clients, often through LinkedIn connections.

What can we do to build trust in our business outside of working hard and providing a good service repeatedly, over a period of time? Trust is an intrinsic part of business growth.

Here are 5 tips:
1. Share good customer testimonials in your marketing whether on social media, printed marketing materials or in person at a networking event
2. Attend networking events regularly and at them, in your permitted elevator pitch, talk about recent jobs completed, problems solved for clients, good feedback. Build trust by turning up looking professional, being reliable and having marketing materials to share.
3. Offer free services to spread reputation and build trust, such as running a free webinar where you can demonstrate your expertise whilst helping others with real problems
4. Share Case Studies on your website and where possible, in person. Real life examples of where you have delivered and added value are powerful. They are also great for your website SEO
5. Build joint venture partnerships where you can demonstrate your trusted services working in harmony with another business, thereby showcasing each others skills and jointly reaching a broader audience while positioning yourselves as the experts you are.

Goal, Timeline, Strategy. It's the driver that gives shape to future business success.

📍Set your business goal
The foundation of any successful consultancy business is a clear and well-defined goal and objectives. This goal encompasses not only your business growth but also the income needed to fund the life you envision.
📍Establish a timeline.
Your timeline creates a roadmap, guiding you on when you want to achieve your set goals.
📍Define your strategy and a business plan to serve the strategy.
Your high-level strategy will serve as a comprehensive plan outlining the steps and actions needed to deliver the desired outcomes.

So many business owners just need to tweak their product or service offering in order to generate more revenue. I work with owners of consultancy type businesses - a business model I know intimately - to look at how they can enhance their service offerings. I'm talking about creating 'Value-Added Services'.

Value-added services will always justify higher pricing and therefore improve your gross margins. We usually find they are simply a new way of thinking about ways of working and often it is something you already offer to clients but haven't thought to package it up as a saleable customer offer.

By identifying and packaging up additional services that provide significant value to your clients and complement your core offering you could see a soaring growth in revenue. Examples are, providing training sessions and advisory services, offering bespoke reports, writing a strategy or ongoing support on a retainer basis. By bundling these services with your primary offerings, you can increase revenue per client and boost your gross margin.

What is 'Residual income'? Forms of income that give you a monthly return. For example, subscription services such as monthly webinar training, clients who pull on your services from a monthly retainer or membership programmes with a monthly fee.

Why chase residual income in your business? Residual income has numerous benefits that can strengthen your consultancy and coaching business:

1. Financial Stability: With a base of recurring revenue, you enjoy more predictable cash flow, making financial planning and investment decisions easier (Coorey, 2023).
2. Reduced Pressure: When you don’t start each month from zero, it lessens the urgency to constantly acquire new clients to meet your revenue goals.
3. Scalability: Residual income streams often require less effort to maintain once established, allowing you to scale your business more effectively.
4. Customer Loyalty: it's easier to build long-term relationships with clients who subscribe to your services which enhances customer retention and lifetime value.

As a business consultant it's inevitable that I'm often drawing on my own experience to know about what works. These are some of the elements I have found vital to generate a steady flow of new leads and customers:

Clients come and go and that is an inevitable part of running a consultancy business. The important thing is to keep working on the above and not your business marketing slide when you are busy - there will be a stage where you need new leads.

It's tempting to do the easier things and the ones you enjoy the most but figuring out what really works from your data is vital. Often my clients can quickly identify what works for them and put aside time they are wasting on ineffective tactics hence streamlining their activities and focusing on real growth.

It's lovely to receive a personal recommendation from someone who has experienced my 121 Growth Coaching programme.

In our first session with this consultancy business founder we talked through the key numbers - how long do clients tend to stay on a monthly retainer, how much does the average client pay per month and therefore what the value of each client is to the business. This led to a clear lightbulb moment when I identified how much this meant the business could reasonably spend on marketing to gain a new client. In fact, what they should be spending!

We then went on to review what had been the best means of gaining clients in the last 3 years and therefore where to focus efforts going forward. This helps to manage time effectively. Saying no to things is a positive action (if that doesn't sound like a contradiction!) and busy business owners often need to help to identify what they should say no to, as well as what they should be doing more of.

The suggestion of an incentive for referrals that she could promote to existing referral partners, was well received particularly when I pointed out that with the numbers we had identified she could afford to pay a fairly chunky amount which would genuinely be an incentive to pass new client referrals to her.

I look forward to the next consulting session to see what has happened since we last met. I predict some exciting outcomes.
