People are surprised when they hear that a buried steel arch is often only 3 to 7mm thick.

So how does something that thin carry modern traffic?

1. Soil does the heavy lifting 🌍
Good backfill pushes back against movement and shares the load.

2. Corrugations = strength 💪
The corrugated shape makes the plate far stiffer than it looks.

3. Arch action distributes forces 🟰
Loads spread into the ground instead of bending the plate.

4. Less steel means lower carbon. 💚
Efficient design without huge material use.

Buried steel arches aren’t “thin plates under a road”. They are a soil-structure system designed to work with the ground.

The clearance profile for the new N17 motorway between Gort and Tuam called for a double span asset BEBO Arch Structure.

The standard asset BEBO E15.5mT fulfilled all the requirements – a bevelled end arrangement completed the layout to fit perfectly into the surrounding environment.

The chosen solution for this rail underbridge extension project at Mount Pleasant had a 6.25m span, 3.16m rise, and a 10.5m length arch, along with a 9.75m length arch.

This asset MultiPlate MP200 stockpile conveyor tunnel (with escape tunnel and bulk head) is located at Wickwar Quarry, Asphalt & Concrete Plant, in Gloucestershire.

The customer approached asset looking to invest in a new, safer stockpile conveyor system for a 10m stockpile, which is a specialised underground structure located beneath bulk material piles that provides a safe, efficient way to reclaim and transport materials using gravity feeds.
