Another extremely damp room slowly coming back to life with lime.

Deep reveals, uneven walls, old timber left exposed and a building thats moved and breathed for hundreds of years prior to the last 70.

This sort of work cant be rushed. Old buildings tell you what they need in their own time and lime has a mind of its own some days. On some jobs it takes days, here, its taking months to cure, carbonate and will take longer to settle.

Youve got to read the building, work with it and accept the character that comes with it and thats my favourite part... find what i can create with whats underneath.

Joist overhead was built circa 1500-1550 and fresh breathable lime going back onto the walls

Thought this was going to be a straightforward lime job (never is tbf). Turns out every wall had a different opinion. Hard cement hiding in joints and sneared on surface, blown bricks, mystery repairs from 40 years ago, and enough sand to block out the sun. One minute you’re pointing, next minute you’re rebuilding half a gable. Lime guys are less "follow the plan" and more "uncover the next problem carefully"

🏡📐 Fresh coat, fresh light.

Awkward angles, tight spaces, and a big old ceiling that catches every bit of sunlight. Tricky job, but the end result speaks for itself. Smooth walls, sharp reveals, and all ready for the final finish.

Even the window's got a frame that does the work justice.

Modern materials meet traditional methods.

While modern gypsum plasters are often associated with fast, flat finishes, we believe some traditional techniques are worth keeping alive.

Here, we’ve combined gypsum plaster with traditional dowel beads and cut-back corners – methods that were standard practice before machine-applied systems became the norm.

Dowel beads are hand-fixed, offering a rounder, more refined corner compared to sharp modern beads.

Cut-back corners (where the edge of the plaster is slightly set back) create clean shadow lines, adding subtle depth and character to the room.

By blending modern materials with time-honoured methods, we achieve a finish that’s both crisp and durable, with a touch of heritage craftsmanship that sets the work apart.

Old skills, new materials – the best of both worlds.

Instead of covering over the past, I let it speak. Once the old shop of Kirkby, it had original lime and natural impurities that I left in place, allowed to come through into the final coat. The result? A truly one-of-a-kind finish that celebrates the wall’s history and character. This is where my love of craftsmanship meets authenticity—working with the wall, not just on it.

Lime finish going on over a traditional scratch coat

The scratched layer you see is the base coat—it’s full of texture to help the next coat grip. This one’s made with lime, sand, and patience. No cement. No shortcuts.

I’ve just laid the first pass of the finish coat—still fresh, still working it. This top coat is all about finesse: applied tight, worked smooth, and let to breathe.

No modern plaster can do what lime does:

It flexes with the building

It breathes out moisture

It lasts hundreds of years

If your walls are solid, old, or stone-built… they need to breathe and keep the walls dry. Lime lets them do that.

🚨 The UK's Damp Crisis: Are You Making It Worse? 🚨

Britain is getting wetter! 🌧️ Recent data shows an increase in rainfall over the past few decades, with storms and heavy downpours becoming more frequent. While this is bad news for older properties, modern “quick-fix” trends might be making things worse!

⚠️ STOP MOPPING YOUR WALLS! ⚠️
There’s a terrible trend online where people mop or scrub their walls to “clean” them instead of dry cleaning. But this just forces moisture deeper into non-breathable plaster, leading to:
❌ Increased damp problems
❌ Mould growth behind the surface
❌ Damaged paint and plaster

⚠️ DON’T OPEN WINDOWS IF IT’S HUMID OUTSIDE! ⚠️
Many believe opening windows always helps, but if the air outside is more humid than inside, you're just inviting more moisture in. This can lead to condensation on cold surfaces, making damp problems worse. Check humidity levels before ventilating—cooler mornings or drier days are best!

💡 The Right Way to Prevent Damp:
✔️ Use breathable materials like lime plaster 🏡
✔️ Improve ventilation smartly – open windows when outside air is drier
✔️ Avoid modern paints & sealants that trap moisture
✔️ Check guttering, seal window edges.
✔️ look for moss growth outside which indicates settled water.

Damp isn’t just about the weather—it’s about what’s on your walls! If your home is struggling, get in touch to talk about proper solutions.
