Do heat pumps work in cold weather? ❄️

Yes — air source heat pumps are designed to keep working even when outside temperatures drop.

They extract heat from the outdoor air and use it as part of the home’s heating system.

As the weather gets colder, performance can change, which is why correct sizing and system design matter so much.

Things like the property’s heat loss, insulation, radiator sizing and overall heating setup all need to be considered.

Cold weather doesn’t automatically rule out a heat pump — the key is making sure the system is properly designed for the property.

Do solar panels still work in autumn?

Yes — solar panels generate electricity from daylight, not heat.

That means they can still produce energy through autumn and winter, even when the temperature drops.

Generation is usually lower than in summer because the days are shorter and light levels are reduced, but cloudy weather doesn’t mean zero generation.

Solar is about year-round performance, not just one cloudy day.

Solar, done properly.

A clean installation isn’t just about how it looks — it’s about getting every detail right from start to finish.

This recent DJB solar install shows how neat, well-planned design can sit naturally with the property while giving the homeowner a practical way to generate more of their own electricity.

Solar, step by step ☀️

A quick look at three visible stages of this installation: the roof, the mounting rails, and the finished solar panel array.

Every home is different, so the right solar setup depends on the property, household electricity use and system design.

A new government-backed finance scheme could make home energy upgrades more affordable for homeowners.

The Warm Homes Loan Scheme is expected to begin public lending from September 2026, subject to final approvals, with participating lenders able to offer finance for eligible improvements including solar PV, battery storage and qualifying heat pumps.

Current scheme limits include:
- Solar PV — up to £15,000
- Battery storage — up to £15,000
- Air-to-water heat pumps — up to £20,000

It’s important to remember that this is a loan, not a grant, and eligibility, interest rates, repayments and lending criteria will depend on the individual lender.

From roof preparation to the finishing touches — here’s what goes into a full solar installation. ☀️

This project shows the process from carefully preparing the fixing points and installing the mounting system, through to securing the solar panels and adding bird protection around the finished array.

Every stage matters when it comes to creating a secure, neat solar installation that’s designed to perform for the long term.

What does a full heat pump installation actually involve?

It’s much more than fitting the outdoor unit.

This installation includes the external Ecodan heat pump, internal controls, hot-water cylinder, insulated pipework and the electrical equipment needed to bring the whole system together.

Every property is different, so the exact setup will vary — but good heat pump installation is about making sure every part of the system is designed to work together properly.

Think heat pumps are only suitable for brand-new homes? Think again.

New builds often suit heat pumps well because they’re typically designed with lower heat loss and energy efficiency in mind — but that doesn’t mean existing homes are automatically ruled out.

For retrofit properties, the key is proper assessment and system design. Things like insulation, heat loss, radiator sizing and the existing heating setup all matter when deciding what will work best.

As an Octopus Energy Cosy Accredited Installer, DJB Installs has met Octopus’ high standards for heat pump installation.
