Structural Improvement & Damp Proofing to Extension – Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham

Location: Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham

Project Overview

This project involved remedial damp proofing and structural improvement works to a recently built side extension. The extension had been constructed in single‑skin brickwork with a damp proof course set too low, causing rising damp and poor thermal performance. Our objective was to resolve the moisture issue and upgrade the wall to create a durable, comfortable internal space.

The Issue

The single‑skin construction and incorrectly positioned DPC allowed moisture to rise through the masonry, resulting in internal damp conditions. The wall also lacked insulation, leaving the extension cold and inefficient. To make the space suitable for long‑term use, the existing construction required significant improvement.

Our Approach

A thixotropic chemical DPC was injected to form a new barrier against rising damp. An internal membrane system was installed to prevent moisture pe*******on from the single‑skin brickwork. To enhance structure and thermal performance, we built an independent timber stud framework, creating a new lining system that allowed insulation to be incorporated and provided a more substantial internal wall build‑up.

Reinstatement & Finishing

Insulation was fitted between the studs to improve thermal efficiency. The wall was then plasterboarded and skimmed, producing a smooth, high‑quality finish ready for decoration. All reinstatement was completed to ensure durability and a clean, professional appearance.

The Result

The extension has been transformed into a dry, warm and structurally improved space. By addressing both the damp issue and the limitations of the original construction, we delivered a solution that prevents moisture ingress while significantly improving comfort and usability. The client now benefits from a robust, energy‑efficient internal environment finished to a high standard.
