Below Ground Damp Proofing & Membrane Installation – Kidsgrove, Stoke-on-Trent Case Study

Project Overview
This project involved specialist damp proofing works to a residential property where an internal wall sat partially below external ground level. The client had been experiencing persistent damp issues, with previous attempts to resolve the problem proving unsuccessful. Our objective was to provide a reliable, long-term solution to eliminate recurring dampness and restore the internal space.
The Issue
The affected wall was consistently damp due to its below-ground position, allowing moisture to track through the masonry. This caused deterioration of internal finishes and created an unsuitable living environment. The client had previously sought advice from other contractors but remained unsure of the proposed solutions, particularly after an earlier unsuccessful attempt to fix the issue.
Our Approach
Following a detailed assessment, we specified a membrane-based damp proofing system to manage and isolate moisture effectively. Existing plaster was removed to expose the masonry, and a salt stabiliser was applied to control heavy hygroscopic salt contamination. A masonry sealing substrate coating was then applied to create a sound surface for the membrane. A high-performance membrane system was installed and fully sealed into the solid slab floor to ensure continuity of protection, using self-sealing plug fixings to maintain system integrity.
Reinstatement & Finishing
The wall was dry-lined with insulated plasterboard to improve thermal performance, then plaster skimmed to a smooth finish, leaving the area ready for decoration. All works were completed cleanly and professionally.
The Result
The property now benefits from a fully protected internal wall, with the recurring damp issue resolved using a proven, long-term system. By addressing both moisture ingress and underlying salt contamination, we delivered a durable solution and left the client with a clean, dry and professionally finished space.
