This week marks Mental Health Awareness Week, and it has given us an opportunity to reflect on what we can do here at BHL to further support the wellbeing of our employees.
The theme for this yearβs Mental Health Awareness Week is βActionβ, and that is exactly what we aim to take. We didnβt want to do a fleeting, token, transient gesture or activity, we wanted to do something long lasting, tangible, meaningful and hopefully helpful for us as a workforce.
It is in light of that notion that we have just signed the Mental Health At Work Commitment, an initiative developed and overseen by the incredible Mental Health Charity - Mind. By signing the Commitment, we have committed to achieving better mental health outcomes and a genuine longer-term positive impact on staffβs wellbeing. We join a growing movement of almost 4,000 organisations.
1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem of some kind each year in England and Wales, meaning we most likely all know someone close to us or have indeed suffered with mental health conditions ourselves at some point in our lives. I know personally only too well how imperative it is that we support each other, that we talk and that we look to reduce any nonsensical stigma, guilt or shame.
The Mental Health at Work Commitment provides a simple framework for employers who recognise the importance of promoting the mental health and wellbeing of their people.
It sets out six clear standards based on what best practice has shown is needed to make a positive difference. Following these leaves employers better equipped to create an environment where employees can thrive.
This is a long term strategy for us, and over the coming months we will be implementing this framework and putting support in place to reach these standards and more importantly further developing our open and accepting workplace.
With issues like stress, anxiety, and depression common across all employers, regardless of size or sector, we MUST act together, so join us today in signing the Commitment and watch this space for how we ACTION this pledge! βπ»π£ππͺ
