The recent heavy rainfall in Edinburgh has been a timely reminder of just how quickly weaknesses in a building envelope can become visible.

As summer comes to an end and we head towards the wetter, harsher months, now is the time to identify potential issues before they become costly problems.

📣 We’re thrilled to welcome Neil Armstrong to the team at AR Group as our new Commercial Manager!

Neil brings invaluable experience across the UK facade industry, with expertise in complex glass facade engineering and curtain wall systems. With a rich background spanning commercial management, quantity surveying, estimating, and financial control, most recently serving as Commercial Director at Albann Ltd, he has a deep understanding of project lifecycles from the supply chain to final installation.

Known for his exceptional commercial awareness and strong technical knowledge, Neil excels at building strong stakeholder relationships and driving product and service excellence.

In his new role, Neil will drive project efficiency, contract clarity, and strong commercial management, ensuring our projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards for our clients.

PROJECT SECURED | James Gillespie’s High School, Edinburgh - Curtain Wall Remediation

Following reports of water ingress, AR Group were initially instructed to attend site and investigate the existing curtain wall screens.

We carried out an intrusive survey, documenting our findings with detailed photographs and video evidence, before producing a comprehensive report outlining the issues identified and our recommended remedial works.

Following review of our findings, the client has now instructed us to proceed with the remedial works.

We believe this approach provides real value to our clients. Clear evidence, transparent reporting and informed recommendations give clients confidence that they understand the issues and, importantly, why the proposed solution is required.

Another project secured, and another opportunity to put our specialist façade knowledge into practice.

This month, we’re celebrating an incredible milestone for our Director, Donald Fraser, marking 43 years working within the glazing and façade industry.

Over more than four decades, Donald has seen the industry change enormously. From the systems and technology we work with to the scale, complexity and standards expected across today’s built environment, his career has spanned generations of change.

The knowledge Donald has built over those 43 years continues to play an important part in AR Group today, whether that’s understanding complex façade issues, finding practical solutions on site or passing that experience on to the next generation of the team.

From one of Donald’s earliest days in the industry to today, pictured with his grandson, these two photographs capture just how much can change in 43 years.

PROJECT UPDATE | EDINBURGH NAPIER UNIVERSITY

Works are progressing well at Edinburgh Napier University’s Craiglockhart Campus, where AR Group is delivering a comprehensive fire compartmentation upgrade within the atrium.

As Main Contractor, we are managing the removal of end-of-life fire curtains and steel balustrades, followed by the installation of new Forster fire-rated glazed screens and doors. The project also includes associated plasterboard works, decorations, floor coverings and electrical works to interface the new fire-rated doors with the University’s existing fire alarm system, ensuring the required fail-safe operation.

Our role extends beyond the installation works, with responsibility for scaffold design, enabling works, CDM coordination, programming and sequencing of multiple trades, health and safety management, quality assurance, subcontractor coordination and client liaison—all delivered within a live university environment with minimal disruption.

Another successful visit to ICC Wales, carrying out challenging high-level glass replacements.

Projects of this nature require careful coordination from the outset. Our involvement covers initial surveys and glass specification through to traffic management, road closures, specialist lifting equipment and the safe installation of the replacement units.

🔥 FORSTER FIRE-RATED SYSTEMS TRAINING | TEAM DEVELOPMENT

Continuing to strengthen our technical expertise, members of the AR Group team have recently completed specialist Forster fire-rated systems training, achieving qualifications across the Thermfix Vario Fire-Rated Curtain Wall System and Forster Fire-Rated Internal Glazed Doors and Glazed Partitions.

The training focused on the design, performance, certification and installation requirements of these fire-rated systems, including critical detailing, system components, inspection, functionality and the varying fire resistance classifications available.

This additional knowledge enhances our capability to specify, survey, design, supply, install, inspect and maintain certified fire-rated glazing systems, ensuring we continue to deliver compliant, high-quality solutions for our clients.

Investing in specialist training is an important part of maintaining the highest technical standards and continuing to develop expertise across the business.
