The Future Homes Standard is coming – but how do you feel about it?

From 2025, all new build homes in England will be required to meet much tougher energy efficiency standards. Gas boilers will be phased out. Low-carbon heating systems like heat pumps will become the norm. Solar panels and improved insulation are expected as standard.

But are homebuyers ready for the change? We’d love to know: If you were buying a new build home in 2025, which feature would matter most to you?

🟦 A heat pump instead of a gas boiler?
🟦 Solar panels for lower electricity bills?
🟦 Better insulation and airtightness?
🟦 Or would you still prefer a gas boiler?

The shift to low-carbon homes is a huge opportunity, but only if the solutions work for the people living in them.

Leave a comment and let us know what you think!

What is a ground source heat pump?

We often get asked about the difference between air source and ground source heat pumps.

Ground source systems extract heat from pipes buried in your garden or beneath your property. Even in winter, the ground maintains a steady temperature, making these systems incredibly efficient year-round.

✅ Ultra-low running costs
✅ Consistent heating even in cold weather
✅ Long lifespan with minimal maintenance
✅ Eligible for government support schemes
✅ Ideal for new builds or homes with outside space

They’re a long-term, low-carbon heating solution – and they quietly get on with the job, hidden underground. If you’re planning a renovation or new build, ground source could be the most efficient investment you make.

Big news for the public sector!

The UK government has announced a £630 million investment in clean energy upgrades for public buildings.

This funding will support the rollout of solar panels, heat pumps and insulation across schools, care homes, hospitals, museums and community centres - helping to cut energy bills and carbon emissions at scale.

The upgrades are expected to save around £650 million in energy costs each year over the next 12 years, while moving the UK closer to its net zero targets.

At SCIS Group, we’ve already delivered similar results for sites like Stratford Park Leisure Centre and The Pulse, helping local authorities decarbonise with confidence.

We’re pleased to share that SCIS Group has obtained Information Membership with the National Access and Scaffolding Confederation (NASC).

Scaffolding plays a vital role in the safe and efficient delivery of our solar PV and retrofit projects. While we’re not a scaffolding contractor ourselves, our work depends on trusted partners who are, and staying aligned with best practice is essential.

Through this membership, we gain access to the latest industry guidance, technical updates, and compliance standards, helping us to plan more effectively and collaborate more confidently on-site.

It’s another step in our commitment to holding ourselves to the highest standards and are dedicated to continuous improvement across all aspects of our scaffolding operations.

A big thanks to our scaffolding expert Terry Miles!

We’re proud to be upgrading over 1,000 social homes for Somerset Council, in partnership with the ECO Grants Team and the Centre for Sustainable Energy.

Many of these properties were cold, damp and expensive to heat. Working closely with residents, we delivered innovative solar panels as well as insulation and heat pumps where needed, bringing homes up to an EPC minimum rating of C.
The result? Warmer, more comfortable homes, significantly lower energy bills, and reduced carbon emissions - at no or minimal cost to tenants thanks to ECO funding.

A big thanks to Lewis Lambert, Andrew Randall, Pete McNeill and Jacqueline Marett for sharing this story!

More choice, lower bills and greener homes!

The UK government’s latest proposals are set to transform how families upgrade their heating systems.

Under the updated Boiler Upgrade Scheme, households could soon access grants for a wider range of technologies like air-to-air heat pumps and heat batteries, while benefiting from new financing options like leasing or spreading costs over time.

With applications up 88% year-on-year, demand for heat pumps is booming. The government is also investing in training up to 18,000 professionals to install energy efficiency measures to support homeowners and the UK’s net zero goals.

Landlords: discover award-winning energy efficiency!

Upgrading your properties isn’t just about compliance: it’s about attracting and retaining tenants, reducing long-term costs, and increasing asset value. Our work with Watford Community Housing is a prime example.

We helped improve 250 properties with external wall insulation and other energy-saving measures, raising them to EPC Band C. This means tenants save around £400 per year on energy bills, while landlords benefit from reduced maintenance costs and a more sustainable portfolio.

Backed by the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund (SHDF), this £3.2 million project was recognised at the 2024 Greater London Energy Efficiency Awards, winning ‘Regional Large-Scale Project of the Year’.
