Twenty years of buoy handling, wreck marking, towing and hydrographic surveying for Trinity House Vessel (THV) ๐€๐ฅ๐ž๐ซ๐ญ.

Constructed in 2006 at Gdansk in Poland and assigned IMO number 9338618, Alert is a Rapid Intervention Vessel stationed at Harwich but registered in London.

At 39 metres and with a service speed of 12kts, Alert is capable of all of the above and more. Her area of operation is the south east coast and she is equipped to deal with most maritime incidents.

Happy Birthday.

It may have taken her six or seven years but she made it eventually.

At around six pm tomorrow, April 4th, ๐‡๐Œ๐Œ ๐€๐ฅ๐ ๐ž๐œ๐ข๐ซ๐š๐ฌ will put in to Felixstowe for the first time. Deployed on the FE4 Far East-Europe loop for The Premier Alliance of HMM, ONE and Yang Ming, the vessel is presently slow steaming off the coast of Norfolk and Suffolk.

HMM Algeciras will use Berth 9, once MSC Alessia departs early tomorrow afternoon, for what is expected to be a two or three day stay in Suffolk. Prior to calling at Felixstowe, the vessel worked at ports in China, Vietnam & Singapore before departing Rotterdam four days ago.

Constructed throughout 2019, HMM Algeciras was launched early in 2020 and sails under the Korean flag. At 400 metres LOA, she is another of the largest vessels to call at Felixstowe, boasting a capacity of 23,964 teus and is one of seven similar ships in the HMM fleet.

The port of Felixstowe presently has seven vessels of varying size alongside, all except one of which, OOCL United Kingdom, are due to sail today. First away, with a confirmed departure time of 10;15h, will be 271 metre CMA CGM Tokyo outbound for Antwerp's K730 Container Terminal

Today looks like being an interesting one for the Svitzer tug crews as five of the seven in port, CMA CGM Tokyo, Traiguen, MSC Kayley, MSC Emma and MSC Madrid will all be availing themselves of Svitzer's services. ๐Œ๐’๐‚ ๐Œ๐š๐๐ซ๐ข๐, close to midnight, will be the last of the quintet.

For quite a bit of her three and a bit day stay alongside Berth 9, ๐Œ๐’๐‚ ๐Œ๐จ๐ง๐ข๐œ๐š ๐‚๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐š has sat uncomplaining surrounded by a dank, moisture-laden mist. From Felixstowe, she is due to sail around midday on Wednesday, Monica Cristina can expect somewhat improved conditions at Bremerhaven and Gdansk, her next two ports of call.

On days like this who would be a member of the mooring party or a ship-to-shore crane driver?

Were it not for the enormous red stencil amidships, ๐Ž๐Ž๐‚๐‹ ๐’๐ฉ๐š๐ข๐ง would be virtually invisible in the pea soup that shrouded the port of Felixstowe for much of the past weekend. The vessel set sail for Zeebrugge early on Sunday afternoon assisted by Svitzer tugs Deben, Shotley and Kent; she put to sea into the murk with a favourable sea state and a very gentle swell to see her on her way.

Visibility? Well, the less said!

Not obviously a Mediterranean Shipping Company vessel from its outward appearance, the only clue being the quantity of MSC boxes aboard, here chartered-in ๐†๐ซ๐ž๐ž๐ง๐Ÿ๐ข๐ž๐ฅ๐ arrives at Felixstowe on a hazy Thursday afternoon. Less than an hour later, 272 metre Greenfield would be expertly positioned between COSCO Excellence and Hapag Lloyd's lightly loaded Mehuin, which sailed later that night.

Two first time callers at the port of Felixstowe are expected within the next twenty four hours.

First up and due at around 03;00h tomorrow, inbound for Trinity 5, is Hapag Lloyd's ๐Œ๐ž๐ก๐ฎ๐ข๐ง. Quite how the name is pronounced is unclear but she is a sistership of both Maipo and Kalahari Express. Each of the three measures 305 metres x 40 metres with the former boasting a slightly larger 7,723 TEU's as opposed to the 6,589 capacity of Mehuin and Kalahari Express.

Later in the day, probably about twelve hours or so after Mehuin, will be MSC's curiously named ๐†๐ซ๐ž๐ž๐ง๐Ÿ๐ข๐ž๐ฅ๐. Trinity 6 will be her intended berth for what is expected to be a stay of less than a day. At just 272 metres LOA across a beam of 43, 2024 built Mehuin is presently deployed on MSC's Ind/Pak Service connecting the Indian sub-continent with the NWC.

Inbound for Trinity 7 tonight and making a first call at Felixstowe on her maiden voyage is Singapore ๐„๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ ๐„๐จ๐ง. The vessel is deployed on Evergreen's China-Europe Shuttle Service and arrives in Suffolk directly from Colombo having also called at Xingang, Ningbo Shanghai, Yantian and Singapore en route.

Constructed by Samsung Heavy Industries on Geoje Island, South Korea during 2025, Ever Eon was delivered to the line in late December of that year and entered service almost immediately. Classified Post-Suezmax, Ever Eon boasts an LOA of 369 metres with a nominal capacity of 16,000 TEUs across a beam of 54 metres.

At the time of writing Ever Eon (not to be confused with Evergreen's older and larger Ever Aeon) is due to round Beach End at about 20;00h tonight, Tuesday.

Inbound at the time of writing and due to be alongside in the early hours of tomorrow morning for her first visit to Felixstowe is ๐๐๐‚ ๐„๐ฅ๐ข๐ฌ๐š๐›๐ž๐ญ๐ก. Elisabeth is one of five 'Denmark' type multi-purpose twin deck vessels, each of which measures 161 by 28 metres and is equipped with three port side cranes. For this call Trinity 2 will be her berth for around 18 hours.

BBC Chartering has been in business since 1997 and takes its name from founding partners Roelf Briese and Bruno Bischoff. The company operates in excess of 140 ships of varying heavy lift capability offering both liner services and ad-hoc tramp movements around the world. From Felixstowe BBC Elisabeth will head for the east coast of South America for her next tasking.

๐Œ๐’๐‚ ๐‚๐š๐ซ๐ฆ๐ž๐ฅ๐š, younger sister of MSC Mariacristina, will make her maiden call at Felixstowe tomorrow, Friday the 20th, for what is expected to be a three day stopover.

Carmela was largely constructed during 2023 and 2024, concluded her sea trials at the end of that year before being handed over to Mediterranean Shipping Company in early January of 2025 following a build schedule of approximately eighteen months.

AT 366 metres, Liberian flagged MSC Carmela has a capacity of 16,196 TEUs, 1800 of them reefers, across a beam of 51 metres. The vessel is the second of eight LNG powered boxships on order from state owned Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co. in China.

16/02/2026

Mediterranean Shipping Company, whose UK headquarters is just down the road from Felixstowe adjacent to the A14 road, is the single biggest user of the port's deep water container berths. On any given day there is usually at least one MSC vessel either alongside or inbound, sometimes two.

Geneva based MSC have sailed some distance since the 1970's when, represented in the UK by Medite Shipping Company, the line employed second hand vessels as it developed general cargo services to and from East Africa and the Mediterranean out of the port of Hull.

These days there are considerably more new builds in the fleet and the line has been an independent carrier since Maersk quit their 2M agreement early in 2025. Ploughing a lone furrow, but not wholly so, the Swiss/Italian line has agreements in place with partners on a selection of other routes.

Operational cooperations with ZIM (Asia-US East Coast & Gulf) and the Shipping Corporation of India (India/Pakistan) together with a slot charter agreement with Ocean Network Express (Asia-Europe and Med trade lanes) further enhance MSC's already huge worldwide network coverage.

In an eight day period from last Saturday until next, the 21st, Felixstowe has seen or can expect to see twelve scheduled MSC prefixed vessels in port together with two more, ๐’๐‚๐ˆ ๐ƒ๐ž๐ฅ๐ก๐ข and ๐Ž๐๐„ ๐ˆ๐ง๐ง๐จ๐ฏ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง, both of which will also have an MSC presence, albeit a discreet one.
