UK manufacturing Outlook: May Summary and What to Watch in June

May has shown a mixed but important picture for UK manufacturing.

On one hand, manufacturing activity has remained resilient, with production continuing to expand and some firms seeing demand supported by customers bringing forward orders, stock building, and project-led activity. Official data also showed manufacturing output strengthening in March, helping support Q1 production figures.

However, the outlook is far from straightforward. Order books remain under pressure, export demand is uneven, and manufacturers are still dealing with rising input costs, transport pressures, raw material inflation and longer supplier lead times. The CBI’s latest survey also highlighted that total order books were at their weakest level since September 2020.

As we move into June, the key themes for UK manufacturers will be familiar ones: managing lead times, protecting margins, staying close to customers, and keeping supply chains as flexible as possible.

For precision engineering and CNC machining businesses like Tarvin Precision, this reinforces the importance of good planning, clear communication, reliable production capacity and strong supplier relationships.

There are reasons to be positive, but June is likely to reward manufacturers who stay disciplined, responsive and focused on quality.

It was a pleasure for Tarvin Precision to be part of Saturday’s CWFL Cayzer Shield Final.

Our Managing Director Dave Tarvin presented the Cayzer Shield to FC Farndon, who were crowned 2025/26 champions after their 5–0 win over Chester Nomads 4ths.

Through our sponsorship of the CWFL Tarvin Precision Vets divisions, we’re pleased to support grassroots football across the local community.

Great to see Ben Luxton Racing back out on track at Oulton Park last weekend for the opening round of the 2026 Pirelli National Superstock Championship.

It was a busy weekend with a new bike and team, and Ben showed strong pace early on, running as high as 7th in the leading pack. A few mid-race issues affected the final result, but he still brought it home in 10th and took away plenty of positives and lessons for the next round.

At Tarvin Precision, we’re proud to support Ben for the 2026 season and look forward to seeing him build on this promising start.

Tarvin Precision are excited to be supporting Ben Luxton Racing ( #99) as he competes in this year’s Pirelli National Superstock Championship.

Ben lines up with Whitecliffe CDH Racing Honda for the 2026 season, bringing proven pedigree as a previous championship winner and a strong contender once again.

Motorsport is something many of our team follow closely - especially superbikes, where the margins are tight and the competition is relentless. It’s a great fit with the precision, performance and consistency we value in engineering.

April has painted a mixed picture for UK manufacturing.

The latest flash UK Manufacturing PMI rose to 53.6, which was a 47-month high and a clear sign that activity improved during the month. But the pressure side of the story has not gone away. The CBI’s April survey showed manufacturers’ optimism on the general business situation fell to -65%, its weakest level since April 2020.

Cost pressure is still a major issue too. The same S&P Global release said UK input cost inflation was the highest since November 2022, and the ONS reported that 40% of trading businesses saw the prices of goods or services they bought increase in March, the highest share since December 2022.

That feels like the real theme of April: activity has picked up, but confidence and costs are still making life difficult. For UK manufacturers, it is not just about winning work. It is about staying efficient, responsive and commercially disciplined while conditions remain unsettled.

We are still having conversations that started at the Aerospace Wales Expo 2026 in Llandudno last month!

It was great to get out, meet people face to face, and have some really positive conversations with businesses from across aerospace and manufacturing. We especially enjoyed chatting with people who wanted to know more about how Tarvin Precision work, how we approach quality, and what goes into running an AS9100 machine shop day to day.
