What does the next generation of offshore wind engineers look like?

We got a glimpse at Fraserburgh Academy, where 40 S3 pupils joined our team and partners at 3DW for a two-day, hands-on engineering challenge.

From virtual reality wind farm design to grid connection planning, these students stepped into the roles of renewable energy professionals and absolutely delivered.

How is Muir Mhòr scaling the local economy? 📈

This is a question we get asked often.

Around 40% of our total contracted spend to date has been awarded to Scottish based suppliers and contractors, a sum of more than £6.31 million, and we are taking every opportunity to increase this.

Muir Mhòr will create a significant number of jobs, specifically during its construction, operation and maintenance phases, and we are committed to building a supply chain that will contribute millions of pounds to the local and wider Scottish and UK economies.

At the Mintlaw Academy in Aberdeenshire, we spent two days with the talented students in the Girls in Energy STEM initiative 💡⚡

Working in teams, they explored the process of identifying and designing an offshore wind farm. With 3DW, we took it even further—they built their own cost models, presented their findings, and tackled real-world questions, gaining valuable insight into the energy development process 🌊💨

It's exciting to see the next generation of engineers in action! 👏⚙️

💨 We've been out in force over the last week having conversations about how the northeast of Scotland can leverage the vast opportunities brings to the area.

🔵 First up Project Director, David Hinshelwood, joined Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for the Economy, Kate Forbes MSP, and other industry leaders in for a roundtable discussion hosted by Energy Transition Zone.

With Muir Mhòr being one of the world’s first commercial-scale offshore floating wind projects, it was fantastic to see industry and government coming together for this.

We talked about key actions needed to accelerate commercialisation, how we can strengthen the supply chain, and how we can ensure that economic opportunities for and the UK can be maximised.

🔵 Next Stephen Kennedy gave a project update and with Érin McLeod hosted a ‘Meet the Buyer’ event at the Scottish Renewables Supply Chain conference in Aberdeen, speaking to businesses who want to be part of our supply chain and contribute to Scotland’s green economy.

🔵 Finally, David Hinshelwood, Corrinne Gallagher and Martha Lovatt met with Aberdeenshire Council to share the progress of our project which has hit all of its development milestones.

It was great to highlight the work we are doing to inspire the future workforce with our STEM activity in local high schools and learn more about the council's Community Wealth Building Charter and how we can contribute to it. 🤝

These conversations help to drive the practical steps needed to unlock investment, innovation, and local job creation.

🔋 How is Muir Mhòr driving the UK’s ambition to be a clean energy superpower?

At the Scottish Renewables Offshore Wind Conference 2025, Chris Stark, Head of Mission Control for Clean Power 2030, shared his three key pillars of focus. Here’s how Muir Mhòr is delivering on this:

⚡ Pillar 1 - Clean energy: Muir Mhòr is moving at pace, hitting all key development milestones to start generating energy in the early 2030s. It is one of the most advanced commercial scale fully floating offshore Scotwind projects in development.
⚡Pillar 2 - Energy security: Up to 1GW of power can be generated once operational. That is the equivalent of providing electricity for up to 1.2 million homes every year.
⚡Pillar 3 - Economic benefits: Muir Mhòr will create a significant number of jobs across the UK during the construction, operation and maintenance phases.

How is Muir Mhòr supporting young aspiring engineers?

Meet Rogan: an electrical and mechanical engineering student at UHI. Rogan was awarded our Future Leader’s Fund scholarship, which we created to support the Highlands and Islands engineering students.

Last summer, he joined the Muir Mhòr team for an eight-week placement, gaining hands-on experience in ports, logistics, and weather simulations for offshore wind construction.

Beyond financial support and placements, the scholarship offers mentoring and guidance to participants.

We’ve now expanded our scholarship awards to include engineering and environmental studies students at the University of Strathclyde - Strath who are passionate about pursuing a career in floating offshore wind.

Meet Lorraine 💜

Lorraine is a dedicated volunteer for Cancer Research UK and plays a vital role in organising the Relay for Life Peterhead event. Last year, we had the pleasure of meeting Lorraine to learn how funding supports critical initiatives such as cancer prevention, early diagnosis, and the development of life-saving treatments. One memorable moment was presenting Lorraine and the Cancer Research UK team with a £1,000 cheque to mark the successful conclusion of a pioneering health and safety initiative.

In addition to supporting Cancer Research UK, three other remarkable local charities supporting communities across North East Scotland received £1000 donations following a four-month geophysical and environmental site investigations campaign that ended with a clean health and safety bill. These included Aberdeen Foyer, which empowers individuals to achieve independent living, education, and employment; Charlie House HQ, dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions; and The Bothie Kintore, a youth project focused on fostering community and personal growth.

🌟 New year, new milestones🌟

In December 2024, we became the first Scotwind fully floating offshore wind farm project to submit both our offshore and onshore consent applications. Once operational, Muir Mhòr will be able to generate up to 1GW of power. This is enough to provide electricity for the equivalent of up to 1.2 million homes every year.

So what’s planned for Muir Mhòr in 2025? We will...

🎯 Increase our engagement with local suppliers through meet-the-buyer events, conferences, and other industry events to grow and maximise supply chain opportunities.

🎯 Invest in developing future generations of Scottish engineers including our scholarships with the UHI and University of Strathclyde and STEM support in secondary schools.

🎯Continue to talk with Government officials, communities, businesses, and other key stakeholders. We will share the plans for the project, the benefits it brings to the local and national economies, and listen to valuable insights.

For now, here’s a short recap of the key features of Muir Mhòr...
We are looking forward to the year ahead.
