So today we finished the final day of the AIAA design, build and fly competition. After 3 long days of flying the team successfully completed all three missions with only a minor breakage during our first attempt of mission one. The team then carried out 4 more flights with excellent take-offs and landings including a reattempt at mission 3 to improve our score. Overall Strathclyde placed 27th out of 84 teams from all over the world - beating the last Strathclyde entry in 2013 coming in 33rd out of 70 teams! Success!! The British Hawks would like to thank the Royal Air Force for their generous sponsor.

Hey all,

I will be running wind tunnel for motor testing this Thursday and Friday (5th and 6th). I would really appreciate a hand if anyone who has been inducted in the wind tunnel could help. If you are interested, please email me or message us back with what times you would be able to help.

Also, for all who are interested, we are well on our way with the general build and testing and would be delighted if you would like to give us a hand and learn more about how you construct a model aircraft then feel free to drop by the M5 lab when you are free. There is normally someone there at any time between 10 and 4.

Cheers,

Donald

Happy New Semester!

The first meeting of Semester 2 will take place at 1pm tomorrow (Wednesday 28th) in lab M5 on the ground floor of the James Weir building.

Please come along to the short meeting to find out about our aircraft manufacture and how you can get involved.

We hope to see you all there,

Lucy

Further Wind Tunnel Testing:

Hello all,

Unfortunately I wasn't able to use the wind tunnel yesterday due to a lack of people and a missing form that has now been replaced. I am ready to start full testing today but require a minimum of 3 people including myself (University rules) to operate the wind tunnel. If anyone inducted in the wind tunnel is able to help out today (even for an hour or two) can you please leave a message here or email me at [email protected] to let me know when you can make it.

I will also need to run further testing over the next two weeks to finish the necessary testing for Semester 1. If you are free any days or times over the next two weeks that you would like to help out in, can you again leave me a note here or email me so that I can work out what days to book the wind tunnel for?

Cheers,

Donald

Wind Tunnel Testing:

For Propulsion & Control Systems members, I've booked the wind tunnel in M6 for all-day testing of our current engines and props on both Wednesday and Thursday. Could anyone interested in helping out please email me or the team with the times and days that you would like to help? You can find contact details on our website, thebritishhawks.weebly.com, if you need them. I need a bare minimum of 3, preferably 4 to run the wind tunnel.

Cheers,

Donald

R&D/FEA folk, here is data for the undercarriage if anyone wants to start having a crack at modelling in ANSYS. Material properties are very rough - taken from online sources so if you want to do your own research into the material properties even better, if not as long as they are consistent with each analysis. Cheers, AH.

Wind Tunnel Induction:

For those interested in getting inducted in the M6 wind tunnel. Alistair is able to run an induction next Wednesday 12th November. Would those interested please leave a reply to this post letting me know with a note of what time suits you best. I would be looking to run it anytime after 11.

Cheers,

FAO: All

The rules for Missions 2 and 3 (SensorTransport & Sensor Drop respectively) changed yesterday when the contest entry closed and the changes are noted below:

Mission 2 -

All payloads and supporting equipment must be properly secured internally to the airplane.

Internal is defined as completely enclosed by airplane structure/skin with no part exposed to the freestream air.

Mission 3 -

All payloads and supporting equipment (including restraint and release mechanisms, fairings, etc.) must be properly secured external to the airplane configuration flown in missions 1 and 2.

External is defined to be exposed to the air when viewed from at least three sides (top, bottom, left, right).

Full contest rules can be found here: http://www.aiaadbf.org/2015_files/2015_rules_final_20141031.html

FAO: Propulsion and Control Systems

This means that the task set for you for this week has changed. Please instead consider possible sensor deployment mechanisms that fit the new rules for Mission 3 if you have some free time. Otherwise, we will speak to you on Wednesday about the changes.

Enjoy your weekend!

2014/15 Rules and Vehicle Design Final Rules: 31 Oct 2014 The contest rules may be augmented/supplemented at any time during the competition through the Q&A process.
