New Local Businesses at the Farm 🐏
Yunara Coffee and Wild Plant Paper

There’s something special happening at Killan Fach Eco Farm. Alongside our role in local renewable energy, we’re becoming a place where independent businesses, creative ideas and a more sustainable way of living can flourish.

We’re delighted to celebrate two local businesses bringing creativity, craftsmanship and a thoughtful approach to the resources around them.

YUNARA COFFEE is a Swansea-based micro-roastery passionate about carefully sourced and roasted coffee, with a focus on the craft and people behind every cup.

Wild Plant Paper, founded by Bryan Collis, explores the art of handmade papermaking using wild plants, garden cuttings and other locally sourced materials, turning overlooked resources into something beautiful and unique.

Although their crafts are very different, both share an appreciation for the natural world and a desire to do things with care.

Since writing about them, we’ve been delighted to see these two businesses collaborate. Yunara has shared some of its coffee chaff, a by-product of roasting, for Wild Plant Paper to experiment with making handmade paper. They’ve even tried it out in Yunara’s packaging!

It’s a wonderful example of local businesses sharing ideas, finding new uses for materials that might otherwise go to waste, and discovering what they can achieve together.

This is exactly the kind of creativity and collaboration we love to see growing at Killan Fach Eco Farm.

Here at Killan Fach Eco Farm, our sheep do a pretty important job for us… They help keep the grass around our solar park mowed to perfection.

It’s a simple idea, but it fits perfectly with the way we farm.

Rather than relying solely on machinery and fossil fuels to manage the land, we work with nature.

The sheep graze beneath and around the panels, keeping vegetation down while returning nutrients to the soil. Their grazing becomes part of the farm’s natural cycle, alongside renewable energy, healthy soils and regenerative farming practices.

For us, it’s about asking a bigger question:

Can we produce the things we need while leaving the land in better shape?

That’s the thinking behind Killan Fach. We’re generating clean energy and managing the land in ways that support biodiversity and reduce our reliance on inputs that come at an environmental cost.

And if you’re looking at where your energy comes from, maybe it’s worth asking the same question.

Switching to renewable energy isn’t just about changing a tariff.

Right here on our solar farm, something pretty special has been growing 🌸

Petallica Flower Farm is more than just a flower business. It’s a thriving community space rooted in sustainability.
From seasonal markets and creative workshops to weddings, a women’s shed, and a sensory garden, it’s become a hub for connection, wellbeing and local creativity.

What makes this partnership even more meaningful is that Petallica is powered directly by the renewable energy generated on-site.
Through our community solar scheme, we supply locally produced electricity straight to the farm.
Supporting everything from their drying room and cold storage to lighting across the site.

It’s a great example of how locally generated energy can directly support local businesses.
Reducing carbon impact while helping projects like Petallica grow and give back to the community.

At Gower Electric Company, this is exactly what we’re about: keeping energy local, supporting community-led initiatives, and making renewable power work for the people and places around us.

The partnership between Gower Electric and The Gower Heritage Centre.

The Gower Heritage Centre is based around a 12 th century water mill and focuses on preserving the rich culture of the Gower Peninsula, Gower Electric CIC operates the very latest solar renewable energy at the centres farm in Dunvant and the partnership seeks to promote the whole concept of how renewable energy schemes can help us take care of the planet and community as well as support the maintenance of the beautiful peninsula for the future.

The reason that the two establishments are so connected is because of Roy Church, the director of Gower Electric and a Trustee of The Heritage Centre. In 2012 Roy met up with Gower Power to discuss the feasibility of establishing a community-owned solar park on 4 acres of the farmland. A joint venture, now called Gower Regeneration Ltd, was set up to obtain planning and finance to construct a 1 MWH solar park with 3568 solar panels – enough to power approx. 300 homes.

Initially, the solar farm was funded by the Welsh Government and Development Bank of Wales, and a group of partners set up the project as a community solar farm. Following construction and getting the site operational, the loans were replaced by direct shareholder investment through a crowdfunding scheme. The Solar Scheme is currently operated as a Community Benefit Society by Gower Regeneration Limited www.regengower.co.uk.

Roy has been involved in Gower electric from the start but has only recently taken over as director. Roy is making a big effort to make the farm a place of education. We encourage people to come and visit the farm to learn more about solar energy.

Perovskite cells are a new type pf solar cells that haven't even made it to the solar market yet.

It promises improvements to solar cells that are almost too good to be true, they are more efficient than a standard silicon solar cell by 50% and it does not need to be minded like silicon.

Regular solar panels only convert 20-25% of sunlight energy into commercially usable electricity.

Regular solar panels are made of silicon, which needs to be mined and requires a lot of heat to make into a solar panel. Perovskite is able to be made at room temperature so it’s a lot less energy intensive, and the materials that it is made with are relatively abundant.

These cells are not able to be sold yet as they still need a lot of work doing to them as they can come apart just as easily as they can be put together.
