Last week we celebrated, which in our sector, is something we don't do enough of, as we are always busy "making stuff".
40 years ago, In the week that Live Aid rocked the world and changed things forever, something else happened. In the small village of St Keverne in the far west of Cornwall, Spiral Construction Ltd, now Spiral UK, started life. That's Eric in the black and white photo, wearing a boiler suit and with a bad 1980s New Romantic hairstyle, together with his dad Buzz and Neil Symons, our first employee.
The stair in the photo, the first one we made, is still standing at Roskilly's Ice Cream HQ, after a couple of moves in between, testament to the quality of what we produced in the early days and still do.
We would never have dreamed that the journey would take us to were we are today, from a little team making a few concrete staircases to designing, manufacturing and installing incredible feature stairs in some of the most iconic buildings in the UK. Our stairs have gone into the Royal Albert Hall, the London Palladium and the O2, appeared on Grand Designs, and been delivered to all corners of the UK and the world.
Being a business isn't about the name, buildings or machinery, it is about the people. At Spiral we have built an incredible team, with over 400, YES 400, combined years of service. Some have spent their entire working lives with us, constantly learning and growing. On such an occasion we felt it was appropriate to recognise this, and we presented long service awards to many of the team. A HUGE thank you to you all.
It hasn't always been easy. As well as sharing the happy memories and hilarious stories, we reflected as well on the tough times, I think seven recessions, the financial crash of 2008, Covid, customers going bust, stairs that didn't fit and much more. Manufacturing isn't easy, but we all love it and tht's what we get up for every morning. Making stairs has taken me to some amazing places, and we I have met so many incredible people with some becoming friends for life.
Here's to the next 40 years!
