We’re incredibly proud to announce that Caledon Contractors has been named Construction Groundwork Contractors of the Year – Scotland (Highlands) by Prestige Awards

After teasing that we had some exciting news to share, it feels brilliant to finally be able to say what it is.

This recognition means a huge amount to us. Groundworks are at the heart of so much of what we do — from foundations, drainage and site preparation to access roads, challenging rural projects and environmentally responsible construction across the Highlands and Skye.

What makes this award even more special is the feedback we received from the Prestige Awards judges.

They told us that after reviewing our work, project case studies and client feedback, they were particularly impressed by our passion for what we do, our ability to tailor services around clients’ needs and budgets, and the consistently positive comments about our professionalism, skill and communication from start to finish.

They also commented on how refreshing it was to see such positive feedback in an industry where experiences can sometimes be mixed — and said they were pleased to recognise the hard work behind what we do.

That means an enormous amount to us, because those are exactly the things we want Caledon Contractors to stand for.

A huge thank you to our team, our clients, our suppliers and everyone who has supported, recommended and trusted us with their projects.

We’re incredibly proud of how far we’ve come — and even more excited about what’s ahead.

From a 1-kilometre floating road through the Cairngorms National Park to estate roads, access tracks and long private driveways, we build routes that work with the landscape rather than against it.

We combine traditional construction methods with modern, sustainable techniques, choosing the right approach for the ground conditions, location and purpose of each project.

Our current floating road project is a great example. Built over 2–4 metres of peat, the road uses locally sourced timber logs to create a floating foundation, with biodegradable geotextile used to provide stability without introducing permanent plastic materials into this sensitive environment. Most importantly, the construction method allows the peat to remain in place rather than being excavated and removed.

Alongside these more specialist techniques, we also use tried-and-tested traditional methods including:

🌲 Timber floating roads – using locally sourced timber to create a stable route across challenging peatland.

🌿 Biodegradable geotextiles – providing reinforcement and separation while allowing the material to naturally break down over time.

🏔️ Careful cut-and-fill techniques – working with the natural contours of the land to reduce unnecessary excavation and disturbance.

🪨 Locally sourced stone and aggregate – where appropriate, reducing transportation and creating durable, practical surfaces.

🚜 Traditional drainage and groundworks – using proven methods to manage water and protect the longevity of roads and tracks.

Every site is different, and there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. Sometimes the best solution is a traditional one; sometimes modern techniques offer a better way to reduce environmental impact. Often, it’s the combination of both that delivers the best result.

From challenging estate access and rural tracks to long private driveways, we work across the Highlands and Skye, creating access that is practical, durable and carefully considered for its surroundings.

We’ve got some very exciting news to share… but for once, we’ve been told to keep quiet! 🤫

Something pretty special has happened recently, and we’re incredibly proud of the team and the work that has gone into it.

We can’t say exactly what it is just yet — you’ll have to wait for the official announcement — but let’s just say there may be a little bit of celebrating going on behind the scenes! 🥂

We’ll be able to share the full story very soon, so watch this space… 👀

What if your home could use significantly less energy to stay warm, comfortable and efficient?

Passive House design takes a fabric-first approach to construction, focusing on excellent insulation, airtightness, high-performance windows and doors, and controlled ventilation.

The result is a home that:
• Uses less energy
• Retains heat more effectively
• Reduces draughts and heat loss
• Makes better use of natural heat gains
• Provides a consistently comfortable indoor environment

For self-builders, thinking about energy efficiency from the very beginning can make a huge difference to the finished home — not just in how it performs, but in its long-term running costs and environmental impact.

At Caledon Contractors, we understand that sustainable construction starts with getting the foundations and groundwork right.

Protecting the environment doesn’t mean compromising on quality. In many cases, it means finding a better way to build.

At Caledon Contractors, we’re increasingly involved in projects where the priority isn’t just creating strong, reliable infrastructure—it’s doing so while respecting the landscape and reducing environmental impact.

Our recent project in the Cairngorms National Park is a perfect example. By constructing a floating road over deep peat using sustainably sourced timber and biodegradable geotextile, we’re preserving the existing ground, avoiding unnecessary excavation, and eliminating plastic materials wherever possible.

But sustainability isn’t limited to one type of project.

We can incorporate environmentally conscious solutions across a wide range of groundworks, including:

• Low-impact access roads
• Peatland-sensitive construction
• Sustainable drainage systems (SuDS)
• Natural and biodegradable construction materials where appropriate
• Minimal excavation and reduced site disturbance
• Careful restoration of landscapes after construction

Every site is different, which is why we take the time to understand both the engineering requirements and the environmental considerations before work begins.

Whether you’re building a remote cabin, developing a self-build plot, improving access across challenging terrain, or working within a protected landscape, we’ll help find a solution that balances practicality with environmental responsibility.

We’re proud to support projects that demonstrate great construction and good environmental measures can go hand in hand.

Contact us to discuss your project, we’d love to be involved and to make an impact 🌱

Another project completed by Caledon Contractors!

We’re proud to have completed this high-quality equestrian sand school arena, taking the project from initial groundworks through to the finished riding surface.

Our team carried out:
✔️ Site preparation and excavation
✔️ Installation of the sub-base
✔️ Precision grading and levelling
✔️ Compaction throughout
✔️ Final sand surface installation, ready for the next stage

A professionally constructed sand school provides year-round benefits, including:
🐴 A safe, consistent surface for both horse and rider.
🌧️ Excellent drainage, allowing the arena to be used in all weather.
💪 Reduced impact on horses’ joints compared with harder ground.
🏇 A reliable surface for schooling, training and exercising throughout the year.
📈 Adds value and practicality to equestrian properties.

At Caledon Contractors, we understand that a great arena starts below the surface. Careful attention to drainage, levels and compaction creates a durable, long-lasting foundation that will perform for years to come.

If you’re planning a new sand school, yard, access road or any other groundwork project across the Scottish Highlands, we’d be happy to help.

One of Our Most Unique And Sustainable Projects to Date…

Some projects require more than engineering—they require a real understanding of the environment.

We’re delighted to have started work on a truly unique access road in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park, where protecting the landscape is just as important as providing access.

This isn’t a conventional road. It’s a floating log road, carefully constructed over 2–4 metres of peat using sustainably sourced timber and biodegradable geotextile, avoiding the use of plastics wherever possible.

Why?

Because in this sensitive environment, preserving the peat is essential. Rather than excavating and removing it, the floating road spreads the load across the peat, allowing it to remain undisturbed while creating safe access for construction. It’s a solution that works with the landscape, not against it.

The road will lead to a secluded riverside KABN cabin, where guests will leave their vehicles behind and enjoy a peaceful walk through the surrounding woodland to reach their accommodation—creating a truly exclusive experience immersed in nature.

We’re incredibly proud to be part of a project that demonstrates how innovative engineering and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.

A huge thank you to Kabn for trusting Caledon Contractors with this extraordinary project. It’s a privilege to help bring such a unique vision to life in one of Scotland’s most spectacular landscapes.

This is only the beginning, and we’ll be sharing regular progress updates and behind-the-scenes photos as the project develops over the coming weeks.

If you’re interested in learning more about sustainable development and how to build as environmentally responsible as possible then drop us a message, we’d love to be involved in your project.
