Recently we have been installing some centralised fan units in a property that required an upgrade to their house ventilation for architects Mwclubb in Huntly.

While replacing the unit at this project we also routed the Intake duct to the cooler, shaded gable of the house.

This is a stainless vent cover that allows free flow of air. They are available in a variety of sizes to suit the duct for the MVHR unit

When we moved the Zehnder Q450 we saw this water staining on the chipboard below!!

The installer had not installed the two blanking plugs on the underside of the unit.

The machine was specked with enthalpy so no requirement for a condensate drain but it did need the blanks to seal the unit!

This is the second project in the last month we have been working at where the condensate has not been installed correctly..

Replacing a Zehnder Q450 with a Q600 to resolve a bad original installation where the ductwork was causing pressure issues when achieving airflow. Ideally replace the ductwork but wasn’t an option so the larger capacity machine was the solution. First was to get the units up and down with millimetres of space.

So if you have had the MVHR system installed you need to get it commissioned - we can help.

We would give the system a check over visually for any issues with the install then set up the system by balancing the air supply and extract to the design ensuring the system is providing the ventilation that it should be.

We were commissioning a system installed by the home owner yesterday. We carried out a system test for max air flow before we started our air flow balancing. 145m3 was the result - what? The unit can achieve 600m3 so what’s wrong?

We take a look and something is in the extract vent at the apex of the gable. Some scaffolding and a ladder revealed the issue.

A bag from the packaging had dropped into the unit unnoticed. When the machine was turned on it blew it up to the grill and left only a small amount open for the air to pass.

Bag removed and the unit was running like a dream.

We were asked for some help with the MVHR systems in this property. There were a number of issues but this one is important. The unit was installed in a cold loft but also it was installed behind this vertical post. No way to open up this unit for maintenance without completely disconnecting the ducts and a lot of effort - a very bad choice of location by the installer! More to follow

A large number of our installs are retrofits where we have to create spaces for the MVHR as the luxury of a plant room wasn’t designed into homes then. This is a cupboard we created in the hallway from a wardrobe in a bedroom. The walls were filled with acoustic insulation but the Zehnder machines are very quiet while in operation.
Not much extra room but so long as the access in front is clear allowing for servicing in the future that’s all you need!
