Radiate some colour into your home.

New year? New list of chores around the home? Let’s help you add a splash of colour to those boring old white radiators.

At Southwest Powder Coating we specialise in adding some vibrant colour to either new or old steels.

Radiators are always the thing everyone ducks when decorating in spring, it’s far too much hard work to sand them all back, to paint them boring white yet again…

We don’t normally do wheels but when Out of the valley come asking we were happy to oblige.

Using Akzonobel Powder Coating’s Ral 9005 fine texture, we were able to finish the trailer wheels, along with some other bits! We had also never done a ladder but were very very happy with the result of it all.

We are confident most of our customers understand Powder Coating but for those who do not, or are just a little bit interested in it, we wanted to take this opportunity to share a little bit of information on the origins and process that goes into it.

Powder Coating may seem like a glorified form of spray painting but that could not be further from the truth. Originating in 1960s America, it is in a dry finishing process that combines curatives, pigments, levelling agents, flow modifiers, polymer resins and other additives together before melt mixing them together. The resulting combination is then cooled and ground into a uniform powder similar to baking powder.

A spray gun, in a process called Electrostatic Spray Deposition (ESD), is used to apply the powder, while charging it with a positive charge, towards a grounded object. The powder is attracted to the negative charge of the grounded object, at which point it is placed within a curing oven. The expose to heat causes a chemical reaction that binds the powder to the object, creating a bond that is very resistant to breaking.

As contracted finishers to Handle-iT and Handle-iT Europe we were asked powder coat galvanized Storage Trailers for use at the ferry ports in Tenerife for storing customer baggage.

As this is working by the sea, there is a tendency for mild steel to rust as we all know in the southwest. Due to the galvanised finish the Trailers required a process called Outgassing, this means that the trailer sit in the oven and cooks at 250 degrees Celsius for an hour. This allows any gasses trapped between the mild steel and the zinc coating to dissipate. After this step, the powder was applied in the spray booth in the normal manner, giving a beautiful finish in RAL9005 Mat Black.

The galvanising which protect against rust, particularly when by the sea, with the salt n the air, was then protected with Interpon D2525 UV protection, meeting the Florida rating standard for three and five years, a super durable option used for residential and commercial purposes. Particularly in harsh environment, like the sea.
