Need a tool. Make a tool.

Commercially speaking, it's cost effective most of the time to simply buy the tools you need. But it's always worth taking the time to relax and hone your skills that little bit more.

In my case, I was running out of lathe tool holders and having a tool holder that was the "rotating" tool holder for the misc tools was getting on my nerves so I made one.

Another fun item that I tried with this tool is hot blueing to prevent rust.

For those who are interested my current rotation of tool holders is as follows :
- CCMT turning tool (my general go to turning tool)
- DCMT turning tool (for low pressure turning when parts are tiny)
- 2mm parting off tool
- CCMT boring bar
- Chamfering tool

An older job that came through the shop.

Nothing too critical about this part, just an external diameter of 6mm, and an overall length of no more than 8mm.

Into the small brass pieces, is a 9BA thread locked in place with a 9BA nut for aesthetics as the threaded rod is loctited in place.

In the background you may notice tweezers, this is rather common with the size of items that I make!

Probably one of the biggest parts I get to make!

Again, not too sure of the uses for this part. However it's turned to 50mm external diameter, with a 3mm internal step to 44mm internal diameter.

The holes will take bearings which house a set of gears, the location of these holes relative to one another are the critical dimension on this part, which was no issue for the rotary table and some trigonometry.

A rather common job in the shop is machining these small brass widgets for a customer. I'm not too sure what they're used for, nor do I dare to ask but no job is too small.

These widgets are 6mm in diameter, 3mm thick, with a 1mm lip turned to a 2.5mm diameter. Through that is a 9BA thread.

Another one off job today. A 10mm guage pin that had to be machined to IT2 (+1.5 micron) tolerances.

The pin was turned to nominal size and lapped to the final dimension with 40, 20 and 1.5 micron diamond paste.

Overall achieved a deviation of 1 micron through the part.
