Climate change keeps disrupting the 2026 sporting calendar, from snowmelt to extreme heat.

Now the South Korean FA has said "the K League must transition to the Fall-Spring schedule to protect players from the worsening climate crisis and punishing summer heat"

But what about sport’s own role in the climate crisis?

Sponsorship deals with clients like Riyadh Air and Aramco mean events like the World Cup and Winter Olympics often end up promoting the same emissions-heavy consumption that threatens their very existence.

Across both of these high profile events, we calculated the additional emissions that we would expect to see from such ‘high carbon sponsors’ achieving a standard business return on their sponsorship spending.

In the case of the World Cup, we estimated that deals with the four leading high-carbon sponsors – Aramco, Qatar Airways, Hyundai-Kia and American Airlines – would induce 42 million tonnes of CO2e (more than 4x the total for stadiums, flights, and operations combined).

Leading climate scientists have written to the Energy Secretary, Miatta Fahnbulleh, asking her to listen to the science rather than do what feels ‘politically palatable’ when making a decision about the Jackdaw and Rosebank oil fields.

Letter and signatures below 👇

The climate doesn’t care about what pleases the fossil fuel industry or is perceived as politically palatable. It cares about the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere

"This is an important moment to be emphasising the need for swift and decisive action, to improve the resilience of our country to extreme weather".

With two thirds of England now in drought, will more MPs step forward to demand urgent action from Burnham?

MP Chris Hinchliff has written to Andy Burnham asking him to chair the climate security taskforce.

Union bosses are calling on the PM to help bring the war to an end by revoking US permission to use RAF bases for airstrikes.

The majority of the British public do not support the Trump's use of RAF bases, which risks making us complicit in war crimes.

Trade unions say UK prime minister must begin by revoking permission for US to use RAF bases for airstrikes in Gulf

"Drivers who are told about the safety risks posed by SUVs to cyclists and pedestrians are very unlikely to be deterred from buying one."

-> This is despite a 44% and 82% increased risk of death depending of whether an adult or child pedestrian is hit.

So awareness raising alone doesn't work...

That's why we're calling on the government to introduce:

💷 Fairer taxes based on vehicle size or weight.
📏 Maximum heigh, weight, and length for new cars.
🅿️ Progressive parking tariffs.
🚭 A tobacco-style ban on advertising.

John Healey has asked for a military officer to accompany him at the Treasury, indicating how much weight he will place on arms investment.

Such a move risks weakening oversight of the MoD’s wasteful procurement and pulling funding from where it is needed.

John Healey’s request has sparked fears about the military having too much influence over UK finances

"At this crucial time every scientist needs to examine their conscience, take on board the reality that there will be no research grants on a dead planet – and act accordingly."

SGR Patron Bill McGuire on why climate scientists need to speak out 👇

Five years ago, I wrote an open letter asking climate scientists to speak out. Now governments are in retreat, it is surely time to act, says climate professor Bill McGuire

35 UK universities have joined the Defence Universities Alliance and will receive funding to “support the UK's future defence capability.”

Universities must not become conveyor belts into industries that profit from death and destruction.

In an era of increasing uncertainty, security is at the top of the agenda.

But while the appointment of John Healey (former UK Defence Sec.) as chancellor suggests that Burnham believes more military spending is the answer, real security is about having a healthy and habitable planet, good jobs up and down the country, and forging new alliances.

Great resource addressing some common misconceptions by Rethinking Security 👇

In 2025 the UK government produced its National Security Strategy, titled “Security for the British People in a Dangerous World”, setting the UK on a path to increased militarisation and seeking to…
