As part of a UK Government-funded project, Galebreaker compared cows cooled using VentTube Cool against cows with no cooling system during extreme summer temperatures — and the results were significant.

✔️ Non-cooled cows lost an average of 50 litres of milk per cow during the heat event
✔️ Cows with VentTube Cool maintained far more stable milk yields
✔️ Recovery to normal lying behaviour took 29 days without cooling — compared to just 2 days with VentTube Cool
✔️ Peak-lactation cows without cooling experienced up to a 79% reduction in lying time

The trial highlighted just how important effective ventilation and cooling can be for protecting cow comfort, welfare and productivity during periods of heat stress.

Last weeks’ heat wave in numbers from a cow perspective!

Severe heat stress was an obvious problem over the BH weekend and deep into last week lasting well into Thursday/Friday in the Midlands and south (Scotland escaped the worst but we still saw on-farm issues in SW Scotland). The extreme heat load on cows came Saturday to Tuesday and is captured here with daily average THI levels on Mon/Tues into the 70’s and Tuesday seeing average 24hr THI 71-75 in England and Wales - that’s 24-27°C av. temp and remember that literally one week earlier it was averaging 13-15°C…

Many cows will have spent excess time at drinkers to consume water and cool via the air above the water as well as high respiration rates (above 60bpm and certainly 80-120bpm were being seen) and changes to feeding patterns as they looked to eat overnight in cooler temperatures. There will certainly have been impacts on conception rates last week so monitor that in weeks to come!

Sometimes averages don’t tell the full story. In a week which started with daily 24hr average temps of 13°C (THI 56) in the south of England and Wales ended on Sunday with daily average temps of 23°C (THI 68) and 21°C (THI 66) in those two regions.

The highs were extreme too as we saw 35.3°C recorded on Sunday in Dorset (THI 83!!) and yesterday (BH Monday) saw the south, Midlands and north plus Wales all have sheds at 31-33°C (THI 80-82) and it is the extreme swing in conditions, without the chance for cows to acclimate, which is the biggest challenge in reality.

The THI 67+ data is also interesting - if we solely look at the days Fri/Sat/Sun when the heat hit then suddenly the south of England sees 60% of hours above this level (when standing and lying times alter), Midlands 53% and Wales 46% so challenging for cows to try to cool.

Heat stress can have a major impact on dairy herd fertility — often before visible signs appear.
As Temperature Humidity Index (THI) levels rise, cows can experience reduced oestrus expression, lower conception rates, and longer calving intervals. Even periods of moderate heat stress during the summer months can affect overall herd performance and productivity.
Dry cows are equally important to monitor. Research continues to show that improving environmental conditions during the dry period can positively influence future milk yield, transition success, and calf health.
Monitoring shed conditions early allows farmers to take proactive steps before heat stress becomes a bigger challenge.
