My First Netball Game: NIC Leeds Rhinos Leeds Rhinos Netball vs. Loughborough Lightning
By Jonny Spencer
This weekend, I went to my first-ever live netball match — and wow, what an introduction! I headed to First Direct Arena in Leeds to watch NIC Leeds Rhinos take on Loughborough Lightning, and I didn’t expect to be so blown away.
From the moment I got near the arena, the buzz was real. Fans in blue and gold were everywhere, laughing, chatting, clearly fired up. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the atmosphere already felt special.
Inside the arena, it was like stepping into a celebration. Music blasting, fans waving banners, and energy everywhere. It was clear this wasn’t just about sport — it was about community and shared passion.
Even as a newcomer, I got swept up right away. The arena was packed, and every time a Rhinos player came on court, the place erupted. Chants, claps, and wild reactions to every pass and shot — it was impossible not to get caught up in it.
The game itself? Non-stop. Loughborough Lightning came in strong, but the Rhinos held their own. Lightning-fast passes, pinpoint shots, and intense defending kept me on the edge of my seat. I couldn’t believe how fast-paced and physical netball is.
What stood out most was the crowd’s support. Even during tense moments, the fans never stopped cheering. It felt like everyone was in it together — not just watching, but part of the action.
Lightning ended up taking the win, but honestly? That didn’t matter. I walked out grinning, totally hooked. The energy, the crowd, the game — it was unforgettable.
If you’ve never been to a netball match, especially a Rhinos home game, go. It’s more than just a sport — it’s something you feel.
