Black history month is a chance to celebrate and promote the achievements of the black community, whilst at the same time addressing and confronting the racism that still exists today.

An incredible catalogue of African Americans dating back hundred’s of years, have created a legacy for their inventions, innovation and determination to make something that, unknown to them at the time, has impacted the day to day lives of people worldwide. All of which was accomplished despite numerous struggles and obstacles and during the history of racism and oppression.

With so many black men AND women inventors, it was difficult to chose who we are celebrating for their achievements, so we are also giving Kudos to some more inventors here.

Marie Van Brittan Brown - an American nurse and innovator. In 1966, she invented a video home security system along with her husband Albert Brown, an electronics technician. In the same year, they applied for a patent for their innovative security system, which was granted in 1969.

Madam C. J. Walker - born in 1867 was an African American entrepreneur, philanthropist, and political and social activist. She is recorded as the first female self-made millionaire in America by inventing a line of cosmetics and hair products.

Alice H. Parker 1895 – 1920 was an American inventor known for her patent for a gas furnace.

Alexander Miles 1838-1918 was an American inventor and businessman, best known for being awarded a patent for automatically opening and closing elevator doors.

Blueprint Recognised as ‘Key Innovator’ by European Commission

Clean water is becoming an increasingly valuable resource.

One of the biggest issues in testing water for human consumption is the two week delay between sample and test results from laboratories. With government agencies concerned not only with the environmental impact of industry but also the possible issues around environmental terrorism. There is an urgent need to develop a technology which can provide instant, real-time results.

Science developed by Leeds University can provide that function and the European Commission recognised the importance of this work by awarding the HISENTS consortium with a 6.5million euro grant, of which Blueprint was a part of.

The HISENTS project, funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 scheme is an innovative new real-time toxic screening tool for nanomaterials found in water. The device is intended to test for the presence of toxic nanomaterials in real-time as opposed to having to send samples away for testing and waiting two weeks for the results.

The platform mimics a living organism and is the nearest thing possible to a “human-on-a-chip”.

In this platform, all the respective targets representing individual organs would be in flow cell modules and these modules would be linked up into a microfluidic network, to be used for the toxicity screening of nanomaterials.

Alongside highly regarded national and international institutes, (please see below) Blueprint’s participation in the development was for market analysis and demonstrator development. The work completed has led to Blueprint being recognised as a ‘key innovator’ by the European Commission’s Innovation radar.

Blueprint’s deliverable in the HISENTS project was to develop a business plan consisting of in-depth market analysis, a business plan to deliver the technology and develop a demonstrator for sales activities.

It was noted that Blueprint went above and beyond the brief, identifying and engaging with actual customers who indicated their interest in purchasing the product when it was market ready.

This commitment to the brief and going beyond what is expected of the company has gained Blueprint international recognition. We personally believe that we achieved the ultimate aim of marketing any new technology development in that we sold the technology before it was ready for market therefore guaranteeing a very successful market entry and we are proud to have received a commendation from one of the highest serving bodies for research and development as a result of our work.

Horizon 2020 is the financial instrument implementing the Innovation Union, a Europe 2020 flagship initiative aimed at securing Europe’s global competitiveness.

Seen as a means to drive economic growth and create jobs, Horizon 2020 has the political backing of Europe’s leaders and the Members of the European Parliament. They agreed that research is an investment in the future and so put it at the heart of the EU’s blueprint for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth and jobs.

🔥 ENER-G Switch2 G6 Prepay Unit

💡 Established in the 1980s, ENER-G Switch2 has grown to become a major Energy Services Company providing clean tech solutions to both public and private sectors in over 17 countries.

🔘 The Challenge
ENER-G Switch2 approached Blueprint to design and develop a new innovative enclosure for their G6 prepay unit. Not only did the client want a major aesthetic upgrade, but also as part of a huge cost saving strategy, wanted the enclosure to be as flexible as possible, allowing it to be installed as a two part optional upgrade. This posed many challenges for both ourselves and the electronic designers.

🔘 What we did
As a unique approach, Blueprint offered the solution of a three part enclosure consisting of a mains supply box, a smart reversible safety bezel, and the main interactive prepay ‘plug-in’ module. This unique design allows the main supply box to be connected and made safe without the prepay module installed. If the customer requires the prepay facility at a later date, the unit can be easily converted by rotating the reversible bezel and inserting the prepay module, something that can easily be done by a service engineer. As well as providing an innovative design solution, Blueprint also sourced manufacturing and provided the client with boxed product as part of a full turn key service.

🔹 The device boasts a rugged high quality injection moulded ABS outer shell designed by Blueprint and manufactured right here in the UK

🔸 We check a batch of the mouldings for any imperfections, surface marks and structural shortcomings and for the past 11 years we have ensured a steady stream of great quality components to our client.
