🔍 Terminal Identification & Relay Wiring (5-Pin Standard)
Terminal 30 (Common Feed):
The main high-amperage power input line sourced directly from the battery/fuse block. ⚡
Control Coil Terminals (85 & 86):
Terminal 85 (Coil Ground): Connected to chassis ground (-) to complete the internal electromagnet loop. 🟢
Terminal 86 (Coil Battery): Receives the low-current +12V control signal from your dashboard toggle or ECU to energize the coil. 🔘
Switch Contact Terminals (87 & 87A):
Terminal 87 (Normally Open - NO): Disconnected by default. Closes and sends high-current power to the component (e.g., High Beam Headlights) only when the coil energizes. 💡
Terminal 87A (Normally Closed - NC): Connected to Terminal 30 by default when the relay is resting; opens when energized. 🔌

Dead Coil / Open Contacts (Stuck Open):

Symptoms: The connected component (e.g., fuel pump, high beam) fails to turn on at all. ⚡
Welded/Melted Contacts (Stuck Closed):
The Issue: High amperage arcs weld internal contacts 30 and 87 together permanently. 🛑
Symptoms: The component stays powered continuously—even with the ignition key turned off—draining the vehicle battery! 🔋
🔬 Pro Mechanic Insight: The Bench Testing & Voltage Drop Rule
A pro electrician never relies on just hearing the relay "click"! 💡 Applying 12V across pins 85 and 86 creates an audible click as the armature moves, but internal contacts can still suffer from carbon buildup. To properly bench test a relay, set your Multimeter to Ohms (\Omega) across pins 30 and 87 while energized. A healthy relay must display less than 0.2 Ohms of resistance. Any higher reading indicates pitted contacts that will cause voltage drop and heat generation under heavy load! 📐⚡
