A week of getting stuck into some serious boiler training! 🔧🔥

I've been away at Baxi this week, spending four days getting properly stuck into their latest boilers, product training, fault finding and diagnostics.

It's been a fantastic opportunity to get hands-on with the equipment, strip boilers down, understand how they're designed and develop my diagnostic skills even further.

One thing that's really impressed me is just how much thought Baxi have put into making their boilers accessible and straightforward for engineers to maintain and repair.

At Watts Up Heating, I believe that installing a boiler is only half the story. Being able to service it properly, diagnose faults accurately and keep it running efficiently for years to come is just as important.

With winter approaching, there's no better time to sharpen those skills!

🔧 When was your boiler last properly serviced?

This 18-year-old Ideal Icos hadn’t been serviced for a few years — and once we got inside, it was pretty clear it needed some attention. 👀

This one required a full strip-down service, including a thorough clean of the heat exchanger and condensate sump. The build-up in the sump had become rock solid and took some serious cleaning to get everything cleared properly.

While it was apart, we also replaced the burner and fan seals, ignition and flame-sensing electrodes and gas seal, along with a leaking condensate trap.

Not every boiler service requires this level of work, but it’s a good example of why regular servicing is worthwhile — particularly as boilers get older.

With the colder weather on its way, now’s a good time to make sure your boiler is ready for another winter. 🔥

🔥 And that’s a wrap on our warm-air heating upgrade!

If you’ve followed the last few posts, you’ll have seen there was a little more involved in this one than your average boiler change. 😅

An ageing warm-air system, existing ductwork to retain, a new Aquair unit to integrate, an old asbestos-containing flue arrangement to move away from, and a rather interesting route through the loft for the new boiler flue.

But this is the finished result. 👌

A new Vaillant ecoTEC pro 30 now provides the heat for the new Aquair warm-air unit, allowing the customer to continue heating their home through the existing ductwork without converting the whole property to radiators.

We’ve also installed a Vaillant Boiler Protection Kit, scale protection and condensate pump, along with the new pipework and controls required to bring everything together.

And once the Aquair is boxed back in, most of the work that’s gone into the conversion simply disappears from view.

We’re really pleased with how this one came together. 🔧🔥

Is your heating ready for winter?

Whether you’ve got an older boiler that’s becoming unreliable, you’re planning a heating upgrade, or you’ve got something a little more unusual like this one, now is a great time to get it looked at before the colder weather arrives.

🔥 Sometimes hanging the boiler is the easy bit…

Part 3 of our warm-air heating upgrade — and this time we’re heading into the loft. 👀

The original warm-air heater had been connected to an old asbestos-containing flue, so as part of modernising the heating system, the new Vaillant needed a completely new flue installation.

With the new boiler positioned downstairs, that meant finding a suitable route up through the property and then negotiating a loft containing what felt like every roof timber imaginable. 😅

After some careful planning, we found a route through and installed and correctly supported the new flue system.

Back downstairs, the new Vaillant ecoTEC pro 30 was piped up along with a Vaillant Boiler Protection Kit, helping protect the new boiler and heating system.

A lot of this work disappears from sight once the job is complete — but it’s a good example of how much more can go into a heating upgrade than simply hanging a new boiler on the wall.

Next up: the finished system and how we’ve brought the boiler, Aquair and existing warm-air heating together. 🔧🔥

🔧 Making new technology work with an existing warm-air system…

Following on from our last post, this was where things started getting interesting!

The original warm-air heater was being replaced with a modern Aquair unit, allowing the customer to keep the existing ductwork that distributes warm air around their home.

The slight problem? The new unit wasn’t simply going to slot into the space left by the old one. 😅

With very limited room to work with, we needed to adapt the installation and connect the new Aquair into the property’s existing warm-air ductwork, while still making sure everything remained accessible for future servicing and maintenance.

It took a bit of planning, some bespoke adaptation and plenty of working in a space that definitely wasn’t designed with plumbers in mind… but it all came together nicely. 👌

Once finished, everything was neatly boxed back in — and from the room you’d barely know how much has changed behind there.

Next up: the boiler and a flue route that made this job even more interesting… 👀

If you’ve got an older or unusual heating system and you’re wondering what your options are, don’t assume everything necessarily has to be ripped out and started again.
