What does a helicopter trim tab actually do? 🚁

It might look like a small adjustment, but the trim tab plays a huge role in how a helicopter flies.

Mounted on the trailing edge of the main rotor blade, the trim tab is carefully adjusted to fine-tune the aerodynamic characteristics of each blade. Even the smallest change can help reduce rotor track differences and minimise vibration, resulting in a smoother, more efficient flight.

Every adjustment is made with precision, following maintenance data and confirmed through track and balance flights to ensure the rotor system performs exactly as intended.

It’s another reminder that in helicopter engineering, it’s often the smallest details that make the biggest difference.

What you’re looking at is the heart of the Bell 429.

Here you can see two of our Junior Engineers, Cain and Max, assembling the Main Rotor Hub following upper and lower mount replacements.

The Main Rotor Hub Assembly is a critical part of the rotor system, transferring immense loads while allowing precise blade movement to generate lift, control, and stability throughout flight.

Building a Main Rotor Hub takes precision, discipline, and a meticulous eye for detail. Every component is carefully inspected, measured, assembled, and torqued to exact manufacturer specifications, because in aviation reliability is built long before the aircraft ever leaves the ground.

Throwback to a previous helicopter avionic upgrade completed by our team.

Last week we attended Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance to carry out a scheduled 50-hour inspection on their Bell 429.

This repetitive inspection focuses on the main rotor pitch change links, ensuring the rod ends remain within limits for both axial and radial play. This check is carried out in line with an Alert Service Bulletin issued by Bell Helicopters.
