Meet Latekqua 👋

A few months ago, we gave Latekqua Barnes-Chambers an opportunity to show us what she could do. It’s fair to say she’s grabbed it with both hands.

Latekqua came to McCrory having already completed her Level 1 and Level 2 Diplomas in Brickwork, but despite having the qualifications, attitude and determination to build a career in the trade, finding the right apprenticeship opportunity hadn’t been easy.

Since joining us, she’s been working alongside our Project Manager Bobby Jackson and the team on site, learning every day, getting stuck in and making a brilliant impression on everyone around her.

Last week marked the next step as Latekqua officially joined our Strong Foundations Apprenticeship Scheme. She’ll now spend four days a week developing her skills on site with us and one day at Salford College, working towards becoming a fully qualified bricklayer.

Bricklaying is still a trade where women are hugely underrepresented, and we’d love to see that change. But Latekqua isn’t here to make up a number, she’s here because she earned the opportunity and has absolutely smashed it since arriving.
She’s already got ambitions of one day running a business of her own, and if the attitude she’s shown over these first few months is anything to go by, we certainly wouldn’t bet against her!

From apprentice to management… 👷‍♂️➡️👷‍♂️

The hard hat might have changed colour (and Andrew might have a few more years on him 😅), but he’s still part of the same McCrory team he joined back in 2004.

Andrew McNally started with us as a young bricklaying apprentice, learning his trade on site before developing into one of our most experienced bricklayers. 🧱

More than 20 years later, Andrew has continued to progress through the business, moving into project management and most recently helping oversee our works at One Port Street in Manchester.

Andrew’s story is exactly what we want McCrory Brickwork to be about. We don’t just want to give young people a job, we want to give them somewhere they can learn a trade, build a career and create a life for themselves.

And now, things have come full circle.
Andrew is using those 20+ years of experience as a McCrory Mentor within our Strong Foundations Scheme, helping the next generation learn their trade and become the best bricklayers they can be.

There aren’t many better people to learn from. After all, he was once the young lad in the photo on the left! 😂🧱

That’s what Strong Foundations is all about. 👏

After a brilliant few months with us at Therme Manchester, it’s time to say goodbye to Tosin as he completes his PlanBEE placement with McCrory. 🐝🏗️

During his time on site, Tosin has worked closely alongside our Project Manager Tom Carson, getting properly stuck into the day to day delivery of one of the North West’s biggest construction projects and gaining first hand experience of life within a major project team.

It’s been great to watch Tosin grow in confidence throughout his placement, and he’s been a real asset to the team along the way. His attitude, willingness to learn and enthusiasm have made him a pleasure to have on site. 👏

A massive thank you to Tosin for all his hard work over the last few months, and to Tom and the wider Therme team for taking the time to share their experience and knowledge.

We’ve really enjoyed having you as part of the McCrory team, Tosin. Best of luck with the next stage of your PlanBEE journey. We’re looking forward to seeing where it takes you! 💪🐝

🏆 Apprentice of the Quarter 🏆

We’re delighted to announce Ryan Keating as our latest Strong Foundations Apprentice of the Quarter. 👏🧱

Ryan has just completed the first year of his bricklaying apprenticeship with flying colours, and while this quarter was an incredibly close call with so many of our young apprentices doing brilliantly, Ryan’s attitude and work ethic on Castle Hill Primary School really stood out.

Since joining the team, he’s shown a real willingness to learn, get stuck in and take on board everything the experienced lads around him have to offer. Exactly the kind of attitude we want to encourage through Strong Foundations. 💪

The Apprentice of the Quarter award is about recognising more than just ability on the trowel. It’s about attitude, development, reliability and making the most of every opportunity, and Ryan has certainly done that.

A massive well done Ryan! A thoroughly deserved way to round off your first year. 👏

Another step forward at Brackendale Court 👏

As Main Contractor on the project, it’s great to see the temporary weather protection roof now fully in place, meaning the building is covered and our team is ready to get stuck into the main works. 🏗️

The temporary roof will allow works to continue safely and efficiently while protected from the good old Bradford weather… ☔

From here, our focus turns to the façade remediation works, carefully removing the existing combustible materials and replacing them with a new non-combustible façade system complete with fire breaks.

Great to see the project progressing well, with plenty more to come over the next few months. 📸

🎉 10 years at McCrory for Calvin Boyd!

This one is a pretty special journey.
Calvin first joined McCrory back in 2016 as a 16-year-old labourer, getting stuck into life on site and gaining his first real experience of the construction industry.

Ten years later, he’s a Project Manager leading some of McCrory Construction’s biggest projects, taking responsibility for schemes where we’re operating as Principal Contractor from start to finish. Quite a journey from where it all began! 👷‍♂️➡️🏗️

After those early years on site, Calvin went on to study Construction Project Management at Northumbria University, graduating with First Class Honours before returning to McCrory and progressing through Assistant Site Manager and Site Manager roles.

Since then, he’s played a major part in projects including the Manchester Town Hall restoration, Copper Beeches Grade II listed conversion and Vulcan One, where Calvin led the project through to completion as Project Manager.

What makes Calvin’s story particularly brilliant is that none of it has happened overnight. He’s taken every opportunity that’s come his way, worked hard, continued learning and gradually taken on more and more responsibility.

For any young person starting out in construction, Calvin is a great example of just how far that first opportunity can take you. You can start at 16 as a labourer and, with the right attitude and work ethic, find yourself ten years later managing major construction projects. 💪

We’re incredibly proud that so much of that journey has happened here at McCrory and even prouder of the Project Manager Calvin has become.

Congratulations on 10 years, Calvin! 👏

🚨 Project Secured! 🚨

We’re delighted to be continuing our growing relationship with Galliford Try, having secured the masonry package at City Place Residential in Chester. 👏

This latest award comes off the back of two projects we’ve successfully delivered alongside Galliford Try over the past year. First at Olive Primary School in Bolton, followed by Castle Hill Primary School in Todmorden, where our team is currently making great progress on site.

It’s always rewarding to see a relationship develop through successful delivery, and securing City Place gives us another fantastic opportunity to build on the work we’ve already done together. 🤝

Over the 41-week programme, our team will deliver the internal blockwork and brickwork façade, incorporating channel and tie systems, Ancon masonry support, cavity fire barriers and a retaining wall.

Another great project secured, another new location for the team and another exciting scheme to get stuck into. 🤩

We’re looking forward to getting started in Chester!

The blockwork continues to climb across the building, but this update is more about the people making it happen. 💪

Our operatives have been busy across multiple floors, keeping the internal masonry package moving alongside Bowmer + Kirkland and putting in some great work along the way.

There’s plenty happening behind the scenes on a project of this scale, so it’s good to get the camera pointed at the people doing the graft! 📸😂

Great work from everyone on site. Keep it going! 👏

🔥 Forged. Fabricated. Installed. 🏛️

There’s a lot more that goes into restoring a building like Manchester Town Hall than what you see in the finished product…
As part of our heritage works on the Our Town Hall Project, we’ve installed a significant number of new guard rails throughout this iconic Grade I listed building🛠️

The journey begins at Bartington Forge, where the individual pieces are heated, forged and shaped using traditional techniques. 🔥🔨

From there, they make their way to McCrory Fabrications, where the individual components are carefully welded and assembled into the finished guard rails. ⚙️

And finally… Manchester Town Hall, where you can see them installed and looking right at home within one of the city’s most historic buildings. 🏛️

A brilliant example of the craftsmanship that goes on behind the scenes to deliver heritage work of this nature.

Another few weeks of progress and there’s been a big change on site as we continue delivering the full masonry package alongside Galliford Try. 👏

The external elevations are flying up, with the brickwork really starting to give the new school its finished look, while internally, the blockwork forming the new main hall is now complete. 🧱✅

It’s great to see the different areas of the building coming together and the scale of the project becoming clearer with every update.

Plenty more still to come as we keep pushing on at Castle Hill! 💪📸
