Lukas Sjoman, the creator of the hand-built solar-powered yacht Helios 11, has introduced a new trimaran upgrade to enhance the vessel's stability. Sjoman spent 200 days building the innovative prototype, which is engineered to run indefinitely on sunlight without relying on fuel stops or traditional marinas. While the craft already gained widespread attention for its autonomous cruising capabilities, its original monohull design faced performance limits in rougher waters.

To address the rocking, Sjoman added outrigger pontoons to the sides of the hull, effectively initiating a transition toward a trimaran setup. Due to resource and material limitations while working on the upgrade in Spain, the installed pontoons are relatively small, providing only about 25 liters of buoyancy each. Despite their compact size, the modifications instantly improved the boat's overall stability by roughly 50 percent during testing.

The new outriggers have a minimal impact on the vessel's cruising speed in calm conditions since they barely touch the water's surface. However, choppy waves submerge the small pontoons, causing a slight slowdown that Sjoman plans to fix in the next phase of development. Future upgrades for the Helios 11 include injecting foam into the outriggers to double their buoyancy, adding flat stability planks, and cleaning up the overgrown hull.
