DSF is saddened to hear of the passing of Mick Goodall.

Mick was a much-loved and respected member of the DSF Team here at Friden. After joining the Chemcast Department in February 1989, he dedicated over 25 years of service to the company before retiring in October 2014. During his time with DSF, Mick progressed from Chargehand to Cell Leader, playing an integral role in maintaining quality standards and overseeing the production of many of our complex cast shapes.

Mick remained fond of DSF after his retirement and last visited during one of our Summer Fun Days. He was delighted by the improvements that had been made to the factory in the relatively short time since he had left.

Mick will be greatly missed by all who knew and worked with him. Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

Congratulations to Shane Hardy on his retirement!

Shane was a much-loved and highly respected member of the DSF team. He officially joined DSF in 2004 as a General Maintenance/Roofer, bringing with him a wealth of experience and expertise. Before becoming a permanent member of the team, Shane had already spent many years working with DSF as a contractor.
Shane, thank you for your dedication, hard work, and professionalism throughout your career at DSF — and for all the laughs and good times along the way. You will be greatly missed.
Wishing you a long, happy, and fulfilling retirement, from all your friends at DSF.

Last weekend, eleven foolhardy DSF employees took part in a sponsored walk in aid of Sands, DSF’s nominated charity of the year.

We are proud to announce that we have raised at least £1,265, smashing our original target of £500. A big thank you to everyone who helped, walked, and especially to those who donated to such a worthy cause.

The walk itself was a bit of a grueller. The latest heatwave had just begun, but thankfully there was plenty of cloud cover and a good breeze to keep us cool.

We set off from The Ye Old Rock Inn, Upper Hulme, and would like to thank them for the use of their parking facilities. Full of optimistic vigour, we wandered up to Hen Cloud, then down towards Roaches Gate. From there we continued through the small forest before climbing to the top of the Roaches to take in the amazing views. We passed Doxey Pool, the Roaches Trig Point, and headed on towards Roaches End, where we were disappointed to discover that the ice cream van had already left for the day.

Pressing on, we made our way to Lud’s Church and scrambled through the 150 metre chasm. After a quick pit stop at Big Rocks, we set off again for the final climb back towards the Roaches, Hen Cloud and, most importantly, a cold beer at the Rock Inn.

A great day. A great cause. Thanks again to everyone involved.

DSF recently invited former employees for a short works tour, with a particular focus on the automatic Laeis Press and the recent improvements made across the factory.

The retirees were especially impressed by the advancements in health and safety, particularly the upgrades to the roof, dust control measures, improved walkways, and enhanced traffic management systems.

However, the highlight of the visit was the Laeis Press and its advanced robotics. Many of the retirees have a long history with DSF and remember how our refractory shapes were previously manufactured. They were particularly impressed by the machine’s speed and accuracy, as well as the significant reduction in the manual handling requirement.

DSF Company Sponsored Walk · 19 June 2026

On 19 June 2026, employees from DSF will be taking on a challenging 10-mile sponsored walk in support of SANDS.
Sands is the charity working to support anyone affected by pregnancy loss or the death of a baby, while also helping to improve maternity safety and bereavement care through research, training, and campaigning.

SANDS is DSF’s Charity of the Year for 2026, chosen by our employees. This is a cause that is especially close to the hearts of many colleagues, making your support all the more meaningful.
The walk will take place just over the border in Staffordshire, near Leek, and will pass through some spectacular scenery, including Hen Cloud, The Roaches, Doxey Pool, and the remarkable natural chasm of Lud’s Church, with views stretching towards Jodrell Bank and the Cheshire Plains. The route includes steep climbs, cool woodland, and open moorland, promising both a challenge and unforgettable views.

Please consider donating to this very worthwhile cause. Every contribution will help support SANDS’ vital work. You can donate using the attached QR code or via the link below.
