A big happy 60th birthday to Iain from all of us at SCH.

Iain has been part of SCH for 24 years, starting with us back in 2002, and has spent those years doing what he does best as a steel erector: working hard, doing things properly and keeping everyone right.

Anyone who knows Iain knows he follows the rules to a tee. No shortcuts, no “that’ll do”. Everything has its place, and Iain will make sure it is done as it should be.

That kind of attitude is exactly what good site work needs, and we are lucky to have had him as part of the team for so long. We are even luckier that every time he says, “this will be my last winter”, he keeps coming back for another one.

Tonight, the rules may be slightly relaxed as he heads out to celebrate with a well-earned drink or two.

Happy 60th, Iain. Thank you for everything you have given to SCH over the years. Have a brilliant night.

Men’s Health Week next week will be a good opportunity to celebrate the people who keep this industry moving.

At SCH, we are proud of the team we have. The people in the workshop, the people out on site, the people planning, organising, fabricating, installing and keeping the work moving properly. Good steelwork takes skill, care and plenty of teamwork, and we see that every day.

It is also a reminder that strong teams are built on more than the job itself. They are built on trust, support and people feeling able to speak up when they need to. Whether it is about safety, pressure, health, or just needing a bit of help, speaking up should be seen as a strength, not something to keep quiet about.

We are lucky to have people who look out for each other, take pride in what they do and help create the kind of workplace where good work can happen.

So, join us next week (15 – 21 June), when we are saying thank you to the team and encouraging more of those honest conversations across the industry.

The steelwork matters, but the people behind it will always matter most.

There is a lot being discussed in the industry at the minute, and most of it comes back to one simple point:

At SCH, we cannot control the whole market. But we can control how we plan, fabricate, communicate and deliver our part of the project.

Another good milestone for the team at Bishop Auckland Leisure Centre.

Our steelwork package has helped bring the structure to life, and it has been great to see the frame take shape on a project that will serve the local community for years to come.

There is always something satisfying about seeing the work move from drawings and fabrication into a real building on site.

Proud of the team, proud of the work, and we can’t wait to see the finished leisure centre.

A big thank you to Diamond Cleaning for getting the place looking spotless again.

When you work in fabrication, little bits of factory life have a habit of travelling further than you expect. The canteen, shared areas and day-to-day spaces all take a bit of looking after.

Diamond Cleaning have worked with us for years, and as ever, they’ve done a brilliant job.

The place feels fresh, clean and brand new again, which makes a real difference for the team.

A big shoutout to Jack from SCH, who has been part of a history-making Guisborough Town FC side.

Jack plays centre mid for Guisborough, who have won the Ebac Northern League First Division and earned promotion to the Northern Premier League East Division.

It has been a brilliant season: 94 points, 30 wins from 36 games, only two defeats, and a place in the club’s history books.

To be part of a team that achieves something like that takes commitment, graft and a proper team-first attitude. Qualities we are always proud to see in our own people too.

Well done Jack, and congratulations to everyone at Guisborough Town FC.

Friday round-up from SCH.

It’s been another busy week across the workshop, yard, office and sites, with plenty going on and plenty of people pulling together to keep things moving.

A big thank you to the whole team for the effort, care and hard work that goes into every week. It never goes unnoticed.

We’re also sending birthday wishes to Andrew D, Andrew M, Colin A, Johnathan R, Kevin B and Mick G, all celebrating in May. Happy birthday from all of us at SCH - we hope you’ve had, or have, a brilliant day.

We’re also marking some work anniversaries this month. Sam Clayton and Kevin Blackett both reach 9 years with SCH, and our Trainee On Site Fabricator, Harry Johnston, reaches 2 years. That kind of commitment says a lot about the people behind the business.

Here’s to good people, busy weeks and a well-earned weekend.

A good project update is not just the finished frame.

It is the graft behind it.

The planning in the workshop. The calls before steel gets to site. The lifts that need timing well. The team making sure each stage lands the way it should.

Everyone talks about the construction skills gap as a numbers problem.

And it is.

But it is also an experience problem.

You do not just need more people in the industry. You need people who know what good work looks like, who can read a situation on site, who can spot an issue early, and who take pride in doing the job properly.

That sort of skill takes time.

It comes from workshops, sites, mentors, mistakes, graft and people being given the chance to learn.

At SCH, we are proud of the experience in the business.

But we also know the next generation matters just as much.

Because the future of steelwork will not be built by numbers on a spreadsheet. It will be built by people.

Steel er****on site bingo:

⭕ Weather changes just as the lift starts.
⭕ Access is tighter than expected.
⭕ Someone asks if it can be done “while you’re here”.
⭕ The programme moves.
⭕ The drawing everyone needs is suddenly very popular.

All jokes aside, this is where experience matters.

You need a team that can deal with the real version of the job, not just the neat version on paper. That is what we aim to bring to site.
