Someone commented on our post yesterday: “You never really know what happens behind the scenes until you start working in the industry.”

That’s exactly why we like sharing visuals like this.

This is the 3D steelwork model for Houghall Campus, where SCH has delivered a 300-tonne structural steelwork package as part of the East Durham College redevelopment.

Before the finished building, before the site photos, and before most people see the progress, there is a lot of coordination already happening in the background.

The model gives a clean look at the frame and the work that sits behind getting steel ready for site.

A good project and another education scheme we are proud to have supported.

54 wagon loads.

That’s the bit most people never think about when they see steel going up.

On Project Newton in Billingham, SCH delivered 900 tonnes of steelwork for a four-storey office block. But the real work was not just in the tonnage. It was in making sure every load arrived in the right order, at the right time, for the stage the site was ready for.

That sort of planning starts months before anything lands on site.

It is the difference between steelwork that flows and steelwork that creates hold-ups.

A big part of our job is thinking through the knock-on effect before it becomes someone else’s problem.

Friday celebrations at SCH.

We’re ending the week by taking a moment to celebrate the people who help make SCH what it is.

A big happy birthday to everyone who celebrated across June, July and August:

Ben R, Iain C, Michael S, Davy H, our very own Gary Finley, Gary M, Jack B and Paul Y.

Across the workshop, yard, office, paint shop and site, every person brings something different to the team. That is what creates the atmosphere we’re proud of at SCH: people getting stuck in, supporting each other, having a laugh when they can, and taking pride in the work.

We’re also celebrating a brilliant milestone for Jeff L, our Crane Driver, who marks 22 years with SCH on 31 August.

Milestones like that say a lot. Not just about loyalty, but about the kind of team and working environment people want to stay part of.

Happy birthday, congratulations, and thank you to everyone for the part you play in SCH.

Steelwork is not just getting busier. It is getting more specialised.

The projects shaping construction now are not always straightforward open-site builds. They are energy centres, data-led buildings, healthcare upgrades, education spaces, rail schemes, refurbishments and industrial facilities where the steel has to work around real constraints.

That is where the job gets interesting.

At SCH, we have seen this across projects like the Energy Centre at Science Central, Redcar Station, Hitachi Rail, RVI Newcastle and Harrogate Sixth Form College. Different sectors, different challenges, but the same need for early thinking, careful coordination and steelwork that fits the job properly.

It is not just about getting steel fabricated and installed.

It is about understanding what the building needs to do, how the site needs to work and how our package affects everyone else around it.

That is the kind of steelwork we enjoy being part of.

A decade is worth celebrating.

Back in 2016, our neighbours at Stiller were investing in the next stage of their business at Aycliffe Business Park.

SCH fabricated and erected 90 tonnes of structural steel for the extension of their existing warehouse, creating room for another 6,000 pallets. With our workshop just around the corner, it was a local project we worked from fabrication through to installation.

It wasn’t the largest package we’ve delivered, but it’s one we remember fondly. There’s something about being able to support another local business while they made room for what was coming next.

Ten years on, we’re proud to look back on the part SCH played in that chapter of Stiller’s growth.

Here’s to local businesses continuing to grow alongside one another.

Not everyone who keeps a steelwork business steady works in the workshop or out on site.

Lise joined SCH in 2023 and looks after the financial side of the business, including management accounts, budgets, overheads and the reporting used to support day-to-day decisions.

Since joining, she has introduced new procedures and a new accounts system, giving the team clearer and smoother financial reporting.

It isn’t the side of steelwork that usually makes the project photographs, but it matters. Good financial control supports the decisions made across estimating, procurement, production and delivery.

Some steelwork helps a new building go up.

This package is helping a piece of Hull stay exactly where it is.

SCH is providing the specialist steelwork that will support the Grade II listed Three Ships mural at Albion Square. Created in 1963 and measuring roughly 66 by 64 feet, the mural will remain standing while the former BHS building behind it is demolished.

It’s a good example of why a steelwork package can’t always be judged by tonnage alone. The job the steel needs to do - and what is happening around it - matters just as much.

If retained structures feature in one of your upcoming packages, this is a project worth following.

A piece of steel has a history long before it becomes part of a building.

Where it came from. How it was processed. What checks it passed. Where it sits within the finished structure.

The Government is currently asking for industry views on digital product records and how better information could improve transparency and traceability across UK supply chains.

It is an interesting opportunity for steelwork.

At SCH, digital production systems already help us track materials and follow components through fabrication. Making the right information easier to carry from supplier to fabricator, contractor and client could support better decisions throughout a project, and potentially throughout the life of the building.

The conversation now is about what that record should contain.

There are some things you can’t learn from a screen.

Theory, assessments and drawing guides all matter. But steelwork is a practical trade, and much of it is learned alongside experienced people - watching, asking questions and getting involved in work.

This International Youth Day, we’re proud to recognise the four apprentices currently developing their careers at SCH.

Ben is training in fabrication and welding, Alex in steel er****on, Sonny in plate welding and Jack in industrial painting. Together, they’re gaining hands-on experience across our workshop and live sites, learning from colleagues who have spent years in the trade.

They’re making great progress and bring plenty of enthusiasm, commitment and fresh energy to the team.

Passing practical knowledge from one generation to the next matter - not only for the future of SCH, but for the future of our industry.
