Norwich - A team of Neighbourhood Energy Champions will soon be available to help residents save energy and money, thanks to a new project commissioned to help the city reach net zero.

The champions will be volunteers recruited by new Community Interest Company (CIC), Our Power, which has recently been established by Norwich Climate Commission with funding from Norwich City Council. Find out more here -

Recently I have read of a few posts by folks complaining about the cool and wet weather conditions we have experienced in. the UK this summer. However, technically weather and climate aren't the same thing. So I thought I'd post a brief summary of the findings from the UK Met Office's latest 'State of the UK Climate' report published today. It might surprise you to know - The UK’s climate continues to change. Recent decades have been warmer, wetter and sunnier than the 20th Century.

2023 was the second warmest year on record for the UK in the series from 1884, with only 2022 warmer. Six years in the most recent decade (2014-2023) have been within the top-ten warmest in the series.
Observations show that extremes of temperature in the UK have been affected much more than average temperature. The number of ‘hot’ days (28C) has more than doubled and ‘very hot’ days (30C) more than trebled for the most recent decade (2014-2023) compared to 1961-1990.
The UK’s second warmest year of 2023, the warmest June and the September heatwave were all made more likely by climate change.
2023 was the seventh wettest year on record for the UK in the series from 1836, with 113% of the 1991-2020 average. March, July, October and December 2023 were all top-ten wettest months.
Five of the ten wettest years for the UK in the series from 1836 have occurred in the 21st Century.
For the second successive year, 2023 was the warmest year for UK near-coast sea surface temperature (SST) in a series from 1870.
Data from the tide gauge at Newlyn, one of the longest available records around the UK, shows sea level is rising, with 2023 the highest year on record since 1916. Other sites around the UK also had their highest or second highest year on record.

Congratulations to WAG! How anyone can imagine the drilling for crude oil (or any other fossil fuel for that matter) will not result in increased greenhouse gas emissions beggars belief. The High Court and the Council should get real. With the UK already needing to quadruple its efforts to meet its own legally binding emissions targets, this is a step in the right direction and will help to bring government to its senses about the applications it approves. But honestly, what were they trying to pull in the first place?! Isn't it time government at all levels was challenged to do wha they are committed to by law?

Supreme Court has ruled Surrey Council should have considered the climate change impacts of new oil wells.

The images we choose, the words we use, all contribute to the perception we have of the world and how we feel about it and how we act. The origin of why, we are in NW Europe, are getting so much rain lies in the ocean.

Our planet is covered in large part by water. Historically, the ocean was referred to as four oceans (Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic) or five if you included the Southern Ocean (around Antarctic…

The Labour manifesto was published yesterday and its proposals would transform community energy. It endorses their Local Power Plan published last year which pledges up to £400m a year in low interest loans for community-led and owned energy projects alongside £600m a year in grants for local authorities.

This is an opportunity for the sector to grow exponentially again realising our 2030 Vision of growing 12-20 fold by 2030. It is a bold and ambitious policy.

The government are calling for evidence on the barriers to community energy projects. You don't have to be a CE organisation to respond, but if you ever wondered why it is so hard to get a project off the ground then now is your chance to make that known to policy makers.
