How much security does your project need?

For higher-risk applications, an SR3-rated doorset may be required to help protect critical assets, infrastructure, equipment, or restricted areas.

The doors shown here were manufactured to achieve SR3 security performance, having been independently tested (to LPS 1175) against a determined attack using a range of tools and methods.

The key is specifying the right level of protection from the outset.

That's why understanding the intended use of the building is just as important as understanding the security rating itself.

What’s the difference between Sa3 and Sa4 smoke control doors?

It comes down to how the doorset is tested for smoke leakage.

Sa3 smoke control doors are tested with seals on three sides:
✔ Head
✔ Left jamb
✔ Right jamb

Sa4 smoke control doors are tested with seals on all four sides, including the threshold:
✔ Head
✔ Left jamb
✔ Right jamb
✔ Threshold

That additional threshold sealing can be an important consideration where limiting smoke movement is a key part of the building's fire strategy.

The doorset shown here achieves Sa4 smoke control performance alongside fire resistance tested to EN 1634-1, helping to support both compartmentation and means of escape requirements.

As of today, all new quotations for our Thermal Fire Protect doors fitted with smoke seals will be supplied with a smoke classification as standard. This helps ensure fire and smoke performance are considered together during specification, with the exception of louvred doors where smoke classification is not applicable.

If you're reviewing fire door specifications and aren't sure whether Sa3 or Sa4 is required, our team can help.

Slimline glazing or steel doors?

While both can offer fire, security, and thermal performance, the right solution often comes down to the application, environment, and overall design intent.

Our Slimline division is typically specified where:

✔ Minimal sightline interruption is required
✔ Glazing and natural light are prioritised
✔ Architectural detailing is key

Whereas our steel doorsets are often chosen for:

✔ High-use or demanding environments
✔ Plant rooms and service areas
✔ Heavy-duty fire, security, thermal or flood performance

At Design & Supply, we manufacture both in-house - helping architects and specifiers select the right solution for each part of a project.

When are louvres needed?

Louvres are typically used where ventilation is needed, while still maintaining the function of the doorset. You’ll commonly see them specified for:

– Plant rooms
– Boiler & generator rooms
– Electrical rooms
– Car parks and ventilation areas

But it’s not just about adding airflow. You also need to consider things like:

✔ Security performance (such as SR2)
✔ Ambient temperature control
✔ The environment the door is being used in
✔ Protection against insects and debris

That’s why our louvred doors are supplied with fly mesh as standard.

If you’re unsure what’s required, our team can help advise on the right solution for your project: https://designandsupply.co.uk/contact/
