Thinking about a new driveway this year? Before you start getting quotes, here are a few things that catch homeowners off guard - and cost them money.

The timeline is longer than most people expect. From first enquiry to finished surface, you're typically looking at 4 to 12 weeks. Active installation is usually just 3 to 7 days - the rest is surveys, planning checks, scheduling, and curing time. Book 6 to 8 weeks ahead of when you want the work done. Reputable contractors fill up fast, especially through spring and summer.

The cheapest quote is rarely the best value. The price difference between a thorough job and a corner-cutting one is often a few hundred pounds. The difference in how long the driveway lasts can be 15 years. What you can't see - sub-base depth, drainage preparation, quality of materials - is exactly where savings are made on low quotes.

Check before you dig.If you're replacing a front driveway with an impermeable surface (standard tarmac or concrete) and it covers more than 5m², you may need permitted development approval. Permeable surfaces like resin-bound aggregate or permeable block paving are generally fine without planning permission. Worth a quick check before work starts, not after.

Three red flags to watch for in any quote:
✅ Cash-only payment requested upfront
✅ No fixed address or verifiable local presence
✅ Vague descriptions like "standard base" with no depth specified

We've put together a detailed 2026 guide covering the full project timeline, realistic costs by material, SuDS drainage rules in plain English, and what a properly scoped quote should look like. Read it here:

🌧️ If water pools on or beside your driveway after rain, there's a good chance you don't need a new driveway. You need better drainage.

A French drain retrofit is one of the most cost-effective fixes for UK homes dealing with pooling water, damp at the garage threshold, or gravel washing into borders. Typical cost in 2026: £800 to £2,500. On site: one to three days.

But here's the thing most people don't know - the three details that decide whether a French drain lasts 20+ years or clogs within a few winters:

✔ The fabric needs to wrap the whole trench, not just the pipe
✔ The stone has to be clean and angular - contaminated aggregate is a common shortcut
✔ The outlet has to be legal and properly positioned away from your foundations

Our surfacing manager Ben Sperring (25+ years in the trade) puts it simply: "The mistake is waiting until damp reaches the building. If the water pattern repeats after each storm, the driveway is already telling you what needs fixing."

We've just published a full guide for 2026 covering everything from French drain vs channel drain, to what's different for resin-bound and gravel surfaces, to costs broken down by region. Worth a read before you call anyone.

⚡ Thinking about EV charging at home? Before you book the charger installer, read this.

Most homeowners plan their EV charger first - and design the driveway around whatever space is left. It's a completely understandable way to approach it. But it's also one of the most common mistakes we see on site.

A well-designed EV driveway isn't three separate decisions (surface, charger, drainage). It's one. And the order matters.

Here's what the best EV driveways get right:

✅ The parking bay is sized and positioned before surfacing starts
✅ Cable ducting is laid at base stage - not chased in afterwards
✅ Drainage falls move water away from the charger, not towards it
✅ Edges and turning zones are reinforced where EV tyres track daily
✅ The sub-base is built for static weight, not just drive-over load

On the surface choice itself - resin or tarmac both work, but for different homes and different use cases. Resin tends to suit properties where finish and permeability are priorities. Tarmac tends to win on larger drives, shared access, and projects where practical strength matters more than decorative appeal.

We've written a full 2026 guide that covers both options honestly, with a side-by-side comparison, a planning checklist, maintenance tips, and guidance on what to ask any contractor before work starts.

Worth a read if you're planning a charger installation this year - or even just future-proofing for when you eventually make the switch.

Quick tip if you've got a resin driveway: the most common mistake we see isn't neglect. It's overcleaning.

Pencil-jet pressure washing, wire brushes, patio acid cleaners. They all feel like they're doing a thorough job, but they can break the bond between resin and aggregate. Once that goes, no amount of cleaning brings it back.

The safer 2026 kit is genuinely simple:
✓ pH-neutral resin cleaner (15 to 30 minutes dwell time, then rinse)
✓ Stiff nylon brush, never wire
✓ Pressure washer on the lowest practical setting with a flat fan nozzle
✓ Eco sealer sprayer for resealing every one to two years

A quarterly spot clean and one good deep clean a year is usually plenty.

Ever watched water track straight off your tarmac drive towards the house during a heavy downpour? You're not alone, and it's not just a winter nuisance.

A permeable overlay can give you the clean blacktop appearance you want, with proper drainage built in. Less standing water. Fewer icy patches near the front door. Better protection for your home when the rain really gets going.
But (and it's a big but)...

A permeable overlay isn't a cosmetic skin. It's a drainage system with a wearing surface on top. If the base underneath has failed, laying new permeable tarmac over the top can trap water between the layers and make things worse, not better.
Our new guide walks you through:
✅ When a permeable overlay actually works
✅ How to tell if your existing tarmac is suitable
✅ What a proper site survey should cover
✅ The one question to ask any contractor before signing

Here's an insider tip our Surfacing Manager swears by: ask any installer, "If we pour a bucket of water here, where exactly will it go?" A good installer will answer clearly, talking about falls, sub-base storage, and where the water actually leaves the system. If the answer's vague, that should tell you something.
