A transformative redevelopment of an icon Glasgow landmark, the refurbishment of Queen Street Station how historic infrastructure can be modernised to meet the demands of today's rail travel.

Working in collaboration with Curtis Moore, Sotech supplied over 3,500smq of Optima TFC across the exterior and interior of the station, creating a seamless and cohesive look throughout. Anodised in United Anodisers Regency Gold 3 anodising, the façade deliveries a durable yet striking appearance in the heart of the city centre.

Optima TFC was chosen for its suitability for soffit applications, with concealed mechanical fixings positioned in the panel recesses. Superior manufacturing techniques ensure there is no build-up of metal thicknesses at the cruciform joints, leaving an even and pristine appearance across every panel.

The project also included bespoke internal soffits and recessed light boxes, designed to complement the surrounding cladding system while integrating lighting seamlessly into the design.

The work on Queen Street Station in Glasgow was completed as part of a larger scale regeneration project as part of the Edinburgh to Glasgow Improvement Programme, bringing extended platforms for longer trains and greener electric trains, fully accessible entrances on Dundas Street and George Square, an expanded concourse and new station facilities.

The project was awarded Railway Heritage Trusts Chairmans 2022 Special Award.

Back in 2015, Sotech worked alongside a combination of Arup Associates, Mace Contracts and Glass Solutions on the Believe in Better Building in London.

Headquarters for By Sky B's base in London, the building is designed to be a flexible space for offices, classrooms and events. A combination of 2500sqm of Optima FC secret fix rainscreen panels in Sunrise Silver Metallic Alucobond ACM and 700sqm of fascias, soffits and window pods finished in United Anodisers Sky Blue 160-0, the building creates an open space for creativity.

A keen focus surrounding community and education in the fast-changing environment of Sky, the building houses facilities for graduates, apprentices and staff training while keeping sustainability at the forefront of design - with it being the first multi-storey timber commercial office in the UK.

At scale, detail matters more than ever. The Frederick Douglass Centre for Newcastle University combined 1,500sqm of perforated and solid bespoke aluminium panels with a complex glazed façade system, requiring every detail to integrate seamlessly across the building envelope.

Using Sotech’s Optima TFC system, the façade was developed as a complete build-up, with bespoke panels designed to clamp directly into the glazing pressure plates, removing the need for additional framing systems.

From large-scale architectural expression to millimetre-level panel precision, projects like this show why rainscreen cladding is not just a product - it’s a system.

At scale, performance is defined by how every element works together.

Did you know that at Sotech, we don't only focus on rainscreen facades?

Our expertise also extends to a wider range of ancillary aluminium solutions designed to support the full building envelope, and we’re currently working on developing this area of our website to include further updated information over time.

One of these is our Optima Clip-On Coping solution - providing a secret-fix aluminium coping solution designed to provide durable, weatherproof protection to parapet and perimeter wall structures for both refurbishments and new build projects.

[NEW] Sotech launch new feature film: “Details, at Scale”. Details at Scale is not a new direction. It is a clearer articulation of an approach that has always underpinned Sotech’s approach to façade solutions.

As regulations tighten and scrutiny intensifies, responsibility for performance is being more clearly defined across the entire supply chain.

In this environment, facade performance can no longer be assumed through specification alone. It must be evidenced through testing and demonstrated in consistent delivery.

As such, facade cladding should be considered as a complete system rather than a collection of individual products.

Panels, brackets, rails, insulation, cavity barriers and fixings all work together, and the performance of the facade is defined by how those elements are designed, tested and installed as a whole, across complex schemes.

It is the very definition of ‘Details at Scale’.

Focusing on individual components in isolation no longer reflects how facade performance is assessed, or how risk is managed in practice.

Ultimately, performance is proven not just in principle, but in the ex*****on of every detail, at scale.

-

“Details at Scale isn’t a campaign message – it’s a positioning statement and a way of describing how we work. It connects the scale of the buildings we deliver with the level of precision required in every detail. It’s about showing the level we operate at, not changing what we do.” Claire Ryan, Head of Sales and Marketing.

From the 2013 Archives

Sotech worked alongside BAM on the £26 million redevelopment of Birmingham's National Indoor Arena (NIA) - now known as the Utilita Arena Birmingham - using our Optima Shingles on the exterior and interior of the building.

One of the busiest, large scale indoor sporting and entertainment venues in Europe, Sotech was asked to produce over 1100 sam of Optima Shingles in TECU Copper across the facade. The maintenance-free, unique effects and quality of TECU Copper provides a visually striking focal point to the project while also providing complete protection against the elements.

The venue, host of the 2022 Commonwealth Games was a challenge due to the client's strategy of two 12-13 week windows of work rather than shutting down the whole place over the duration of works. The tight time constraints meant communication and scheduling with BAM was key to the success of the project reaching the set completion date.
