One from the archives

Some project stand out not just for how they look, but for the engineering challenges behind them.

Vermillion, Rathbone Market in Canning Town is a great example.

The 271-apartment mixed-use development sites alongside one of the East End's historic markets and features a striking façade using 2,000sqm of Sotech Optima FC in five contrasting shades of red alongside more than 6,000sqm of anodised aluminium to create contrast across the feature towers and plant rooms.

But it wasn’t just the façade design that made this project interesting.

To allow scaffolding to be removed as sections were completed — reducing the risk of damage to the finished façade — the Optima FC panels needed to be installed from the top of the building down, rather than the conventional bottom-up approach. To make this possible,

To make this possible, Sotech redesigned the FC hook system in-house to accommodate the alternative installation sequence. The completed system was also independently tested to ensure it met the required wind-load performance.

The project went on to receive highly commended recognition in the 2014 Landscape Institute Award and a bronze medal at the 2013 What House Awards.

It was great to welcome the team from Vinci to Sotech as part of our ongoing collaboration with Alpolic A1/A2 ACM, Pro Composite Solutions along with Aalco, for a day focused on sharing expertise and showcasing the solutions and support we can offer on façade projects.

Together, we explored:

• Sotech's façade systems and manufacturing capabilities.
• The benefits, performance and applications of different façade materials.
• ALPOLIC™ ACM and its suitability for façade applications.
• Testing, certification, compliance and quality processes.
• How our technical teams support projects from concept through to completion.
• A behind-the-scenes look at our manufacturing and production processes.

The day also included a tour of our facilities and hands on with samples, the visit was a great opportunity to see our systems and their applications in a more interactive way.

We’re big believers in getting people together, sharing expertise and understanding how we can add value at an early stage of a project.

We’re always happy to welcome clients, contractors, architects and industry partners to Sotech to share ideas, explore our systems and see what we can do together.

Sometimes, the biggest challenge is making it look like nothing has changed.

For the reclad of the towering Premier Inn Glasgow, preserving the building's familiar appearance meant completely re-engineering the façade system behind it.

To achieve the required increased panel depth while maintaining exceptional flatness and structural performance, our team developed a bespoke adaptation of the Optima FC Eco system.

The result?

Over 6,500m² of aluminium rainscreen cladding, including some of the largest solid aluminium panels Sotech had produced at the time, measuring up to 5.5 metres in length.

Months of finite element analysis and engineering ensured the system met the project's demanding technical requirements while delivering the desired aesthetic.

Our latest Optima Shingles project, Hartlepool Highlight Leisure Centre

Located o Hartlepool Marina, the leisure centre provides a range of facilities alongside a viewing balcony overlooking the sea.

Sometimes it's the smallest details that make the biggest impact.

Sotech manufactured and supplied 10,000 individual Optima Shingles, creating a striking, textured façade that captures and reflects light throughout the day.

One from the archives, Hilton High Wycombe.

Completed in 2022, The Hampton by Hilton hotel has become a local landmark thanks to the striking facade making an impact across the town - and even visible from the M40.

Using 2,650m² of PPC 3.0mm Aluminium 3103 Grade in our Optima FC system, the £21 million, 150-bedroom hotel combines three contemporary grey finishes with a contrasting black entrance to create a distinctive architectural statement.

Delivered in collaboration with Metclad, RG Group and ICA Architects, the project also showcased the value of detailed 3D modelling, helping ensure a seamless delivery despite the challenges of the pandemic.
