At SY Ecofit CIC, we specialise in "retrofit" and energy efficiency solutions that help local residents create greener homes that are cheaper to run, cooler in summer and warmer in winter. πŸ‘πŸŒπŸ’·

Lately, we've been getting a lot of interest in our roof insulation work because many Sheffield attics tend to overheat as the temperature outside rises. πŸ₯΅

Our solutions use wood fibre insulation, which is natural/breathable and buffers heat much better than synthetic products like Kingspan.

We've also been doing plenty of floor insulation and airtightness work, as well as ventilation upgrades to improve airflow. 🌬️

Job done! πŸ’ͺ

On our latest project, we lifted the floor in this open-plan living/dining room, installed a breather membrane in "hammocks" using timber lath, then insulated to joist depth with 150mm of Steicoflex 036 flexible wood fibre insulation. 🏑 πŸ”₯ 🌍

The next stage was to install a P5 moisture-resistant chipboard deck and airtightness tape all joints and wall junctions to prevent cold draughts entering from the subfloor and to stop airborne moisture causing interstitial condensation within the insulation itself.

This ground floor is now airtight, insulated and ready to be carpeted.

Interested in making similar improvements to your home in time for the autumn? We can insulate floors from above and below, depending on access. Drop us a line at - www.ecofit.uk πŸ‘

PASSIVE VENTS 🌬️

These types of vents provide much needed air flow to our rooms. They can help improve air quality while allowing stale/damp air to leave the house.

Problem = people often block up these vents with silicone, or debris can collect in cavity walls and stop vents from functioning correctly. πŸ‘€

Here, we removed the old vent, cleaned out the airbrick and cavity, installed a new sleeve and added a "hit & miss" open/close cover. The customer now has greater control of air flow to the room. πŸ‘

🌬️ VENTILATION is an important consideration in the work we do at Ecofit. A "dry" home is often a warmer home, and ventilation also affects the quality of the air we breathe.

Here are some interesting photos collected by our inspection and install teams over the past few months. πŸ‘€

1) "Dappling" pattern on the underside of white roofing membrane in a loft - caused by condensation due to a lack of air flow.

2) A "smart airbrick" installed by one tech-savvy customer - these devices open/close in response to differences in internal/external humidity levels.

3) Blocked entrance to a cellar coal chute - opening this up for improved ventilation would help reduce condensation risk and improve airflow.

4) Humidity-controlled extractor fan - these run autonomously on a permanent live feed (not on/off with the bathroom light or on a timer) and help regulate airborne moisture levels.

5) Trickle vent in window - we usually recommend keeping these clean and OPEN at all times (except on very cold days or when it's humid outside).

6) Window frame with evidence of mould - caused by excess airborne moisture and a lack of adequate ventilation, especially in the upstairs rooms.

7) Dual-opening mechanism on window - easy to miss, but worth checking for! These act like trickle vents, allowing the window to be kept slightly ajar while still being locked for security.

8) Older bitumen roofing felt with fibreglass insulation pushed up between the rafters - this can cause issues with trapped moisture as no 50mm gap has been left for air to circulate. Older roofing felt like this is not breathable, although vents can be installed between the overlapping layers (lap vents). Condensation often forms on the underside of the felt during the colder months.

πŸ₯³ Another fantastic Sheffield Sustainable Market by Sheffield Action on Plastic, where Lizzie & Hannah chatted to members of the community about all things retrofit and natural materials.

πŸ‘Thanks Greg and the team for welcoming us all and for another fantastic event, with excellent coffee, food and music. We were delighted to see local zero waste shop The Bare Alternative there again, as well as independent local businesses doing everything from dying natural fibres with flowers grown in the Rivelin Valley, making hard wearing bags from single-use events banners, repairing clothing, pottery, books… brilliant!

🀩 Great to see some familiar faces, so a well deserved shout out to our fave monthly event, People Planet Pint, which brings together folk in sustainability, whether you’re actively involved, running sustainably-focused businesses, studying, or just interested to see what’s going on!

We’ll pop the link below - it’d be great to see you there. 🍺

A few photos of our latest loft insulation job. This time tackling a large 2-room loft with older fibreglass in situ and an original slate roof with torching.

What we did:

1) Stripped out the old insulation and cleaned between the "runs" to remove any dust and debris

2) Installed 100mm of mineral wool insulation with vent trays at the roofline to maintain airflow (reduces condensation risk)

3) Installed a raised rail system, before laying an additional 200mm of insulation and reinstating the recycled loft boards

We also advised the customer on how to resolve the issue of old torching falling from the slates onto loft insulation, boarding and stored items. Our solution was to staple up a thin, highly-breathable membrane to the underside of the rafters. This allowed dust/debris to fall down into the eaves spaces to be collected on another piece of membrane (and be swept up periodically to keep the space tidy).

More H&S training today for our Installs Team, this time tackling "Confined Spaces". πŸ’ͺ

We explored what classifies as a "confined space" under UK law, correct safety protocol, risk assessment, air monitoring equipment, emergency respiratory aids etc.

Special thanks to training provider Element in Sheffield (https://elementsafety.co.uk/) for hosting us! 🀝
