Fact: For a small display, that might be true, but larger or more traditional Halloween displays can soon add up, especially when they’re running for hours every evening.

The biggest difference comes down to what you’re using and how long you leave it on.

🎃 LED lights use around 80–90% less energy than traditional incandescent lighting, making them a much more efficient choice. Older incandescent lights use considerably more electricity. According to NRG, older-style string lights can cost up to £3 to run across October when used every evening.

👻 Going all out? Multiple strings of lights, projectors and plug-in inflatables can increase energy use much more noticeably when they’re left running for hours at a time.

Use timers so displays switch off automatically
Turn plug-in decorations off at the wall when they’re not being used

FAQ: "The clocks go back this weekend, does that affect my solar panels or EV charging schedule?"

Your solar system won't notice the difference. Panels generate based on daylight, not the time on the clock, so output isn't affected by the change.

Your EV charging schedule is worth a quick check though. If you've set a timer to charge overnight on a cheap tariff, that hour shift can mean you're charging slightly earlier or later than planned. Worth a quick look at your charger or app settings after the clocks change on Sunday.

FAQ: "Can my business claim any tax relief on solar or EV charging installations?"

In many cases, yes. Capital allowances let businesses offset a portion of the cost of qualifying equipment, including solar PV, battery storage and EV charge points, against taxable profits. The detail depends on your business structure and current allowances, so it's always worth checking with your accountant.

What we can tell you plainly: solar and battery installs also currently qualify for 0% VAT, a saving that's due to end 31 March 2027. Combined with the right capital allowances, it can make a real difference to the numbers.

Myth: a flat commercial roof isn't suitable for solar.

Fact: flat roofs are often some of the easiest to work with. Panels can be mounted at the optimum angle using a frame system, rather than being fixed to whatever pitch the roof happens to have, and a flat roof usually offers more clear, unobstructed space to work with too.
