Helping Honeypot Keep Children Cool This Summer

Last year, Sun X (UK) Ltd and HDSgreentech teamed up to support Honeypot Children’s Charity by supplying and installing heat reducing solar film on the windows of their much loved Playshack.

This week, we received a message that genuinely made our day:

“Thank you SO MUCH for installing the heat reducing film on the windows of the Playshack last summer. What a difference it has made this summer over this very hot weather.”

Honeypot has been buzzing with activity — respite breaks every weekend, educational stays during the week, and children enjoying their beautiful 7 acre New Forest site. With temperatures soaring, keeping indoor spaces safe and comfortable becomes essential, especially for vulnerable young people.

That’s where passive solutions like solar control film make a real impact. No noise, no maintenance, no energy use — just a simple, effective way to reduce solar gain and keep spaces cooler during extreme weather.

Not everyone experiences the same temperature the same way

When it comes to designing for thermal comfort, it’s easy to assume that one room temperature suits everyone.

But it doesn’t, especially when it comes to children.

👶 Children are more sensitive to temperature swings. They overheat faster and at lower temperatures than adults. In fact, studies suggest there's around a 2°C difference between how adults and children feel in the same environment. Ever noticed a toddler running around happily in a nappy while the adults feel the chill? That’s the difference in action.

In schools, this makes thermal comfort design more complex:
✅ A classroom that feels “comfortable” to the teacher might be stifling for the pupils
✅ School designers often allow for this — but uniform policies don’t always follow suit

And it doesn’t stop there:
👵 Older adults tend to feel the cold more, which is why care homes are often set to 23°C or higher
💪 Gyms are modelled lower to suit active occupants
🏊 Swimming pools require separate modelling altogether due to evaporative cooling

The key takeaway? Thermal comfort needs to be occupant-specific. That’s where we come in, using our thermal modelling expertise and state-of-the-art software, to help architects and mechanical engineers build structures that are fit for their occupants.

🦎 Five years of the Marwell Tropical House!

It’s been half a decade since the Tropical House at Marwell Zoo opened to the public, and it’s a project we’re incredibly proud of. As a local, animal-loving team, this build holds a special place in our hearts and it’s great to see it thriving five years on.

This was no ordinary thermal modelling brief. The goal wasn’t human comfort (although it still needed to cater for humans), but to create the right conditions for birds, reptiles, sloth and insects, each with their own temperature, humidity, and light needs.

We worked closely with the design team to ensure a space that supports microclimates, manages solar gain, and ensures comfort.

Getting Air Permeability right

You don’t want too much, or too little…

Uncontrolled air leakage can quietly ruin the performance of a building. That’s why air permeability testing is important for how a building feels and functions.

🚪 Too much air leakage? You lose heat, drive up energy bills, and undermine your HVAC system. You’re heating the outdoors.

🚫 Too little? Without proper ventilation strategies, occupants can suffer from sick building syndrome where they can experience a range of symptoms including headaches, coughing and fatigue and lead to mold.

✅ The goal is a controlled envelope:
• Tight enough to manage heat loss
• Ventilated enough to keep people healthy
• Designed to work with mechanical systems, not against them

At our local Grafters networking meetings in Southampton, we’ve been quietly supporting The Honeypot Children’s Charity — an organisation dedicated to improving the lives of young carers aged 5 to 12.

These children often shoulder adult responsibilities far beyond their years — caring for parents or siblings with serious illness, disability or addiction. Honeypot offers them:

📞 Ongoing wellbeing support through outreach services

🏰 Heating the past: what thermal modelling tells us about historic buildings

We recently worked on a 17th-century Jacobean mansion — a stunning, Grade I listed property with 18 bedrooms, original single glazing, and protected ceilings.

The challenge? It’s being renovated, and the team needed to understand:
• How much heat is required
• What kind of plant could deliver it
• What’s realistically possible without damaging the building fabric

We carried out steady-state thermal load modelling and the results were striking:
🔥 A typical home boiler produces around 20kW
🏛 This mansion needs over 600kW to meet standard comfort levels..and you can’t insulate, can’t add wet heating upstairs, can’t change the glazing, and can’t even switch to low-energy bulbs.

The reality? You can’t heat this kind of building like a modern home. Instead, we helped the client plan for informed compromise:
• Localised heating zones
• People-first strategies (yes — sometimes, that does mean warm jumpers!)
• Clear expectations around internal conditions

Thermal modelling in heritage buildings isn’t just about load calculations — it’s about helping teams and occupants understand what is and isn’t achievable.
