🔧 On Site in Gateshead – Hurco Service & Inspection

Today we attended a new customer in Gateshead to carry out a full service and inspection on an older Hurco machine.

Considering the age of the machine, it was in excellent condition. During our checks, all axes were found to be within 0.010mm accuracy, apart from the Z-axis, which showed 0.13mm backlash, a mile in the CNC world.

The customer had been experiencing issues with the surface finish of their parts, and our inspection confirmed the Z-axis backlash as the root cause. The machine is now scheduled to have the ballscrew and ballscrew nut refurbished once the customer can arrange a suitable production window.

While on site, we also managed to resolve an issue with their clamping system, quickly removing another headache for the customer.

Always great to help a new customer identify issues, improve machine performance, and keep production running smoothly.

This week brought one of those jobs that reminds you just how unforgiving CNC machinery can be.

We were called out to a Doosan Lynx that had suffered a pretty serious collision, a parted-off piece of bar became trapped between a rotating sub spindle and the turret. As you can imagine, the result wasn’t pretty.
After a full assessment, we:
✔️ Clocked the turret back into position
✔️ Realigned the sub spindle to the main spindle
✔️ Checked geometry and ensured everything was running true again

Situations like this highlight how critical precision and experience are when it comes to machine recovery. It’s not just about getting the machine moving again, it’s about restoring accuracy and confidence in the process.

Another solid recovery and a great result for the customer 👊

If you’ve had a similar issue or need support with CNC breakdowns, alignment, or maintenance, feel free to get in touch, always happy to help.

One year ago, we took a leap and started Precision Machine Maintenance with a simple goal: provide dependable, honest, and high-quality CNC machine servicing and repair.

What started with determination, experience, and long days has grown into something we’re truly proud of.

From late-night emergency calls to challenging repairs and learning how to run a business while keeping machines running, this year has been full of lessons and growth.

Our focus has always been simple: show up, do quality work, and help our customers stay productive.

We’re incredibly thankful for every client who trusted us, every referral, and every word of support we get in person. You’ve helped turn an idea into a growing business and something we enjoy doing.

Here’s to year two and beyond. Thank you for being part of our journey. 🙏

Today, we visited a Engineering University to assist with the servicing and repair of 10 manual machines, along with a further two donor machines that are in need of being brought back to a machining level.

Our engineers thoroughly enjoyed going back to their roots and working alongside a number of Year 13 students. It was a great opportunity to give them insight into the industry, telling stories about our time in engineering and how our journey is going since school, as well as share some practical tips, including how to correctly clock their vices in.

During the service work, we also identified and corrected several alignment issues across the machines.

With a growing skills gap and a nationwide shortage of engineers, it’s more important than ever to inspire and support the next generation. We’re proud to play a small part in encouraging young people into engineering through hands-on experience and real-world knowledge sharing.

A great day on site in Harlow 🙌

We spent the day servicing two machines for one of our regular customers, a 2023 Mazak QTE and a 2000 Hitachi Seiki. A bit of a generation gap, but both doing their best to behave… mostly 😅

A few issues uncovered during the service, but overall they’re in solid condition.
The coolant though… let’s just say we’ve seen some things 🤢
(If only smell-o-vision existed for LinkedIn…)

Both machines have now been given a green ticket for the year, along with a full service report including detailed photos and recommendations for future preventative work if desired.

And of course, plenty of tea on tap all day, which we definitely approve of ☕️😉

Keeping machines healthy, productive and far away from expensive surprises, exactly how we like it 💪

Proof that smart fault-finding saves serious money 💡💷

We were called out to Lincoln to take a look at an XYZ SMX4000 that was repeatedly faulting out the servo on the Y-axis. After some digging (and a fair bit of detective work), we diagnosed the root cause as the servo motor itself.

After chatting with the manager, we discovered a replacement motor was £2,500 😳 not exactly pocket change!

So instead of jumping straight to buying new, we decided to strip the motor and see what we were dealing with. Inside we found a beautiful collection of carbon buildup and four motor brushes that had definitely lived a long and heroic life.

A new set of brushes for around £130 arrived the next day. We cleaned the internals, rebuilt the motor, refitted it, and…

✨ Hey presto! Back up and running perfectly! ✨

We love a good cost-effective fix… and the customer loved it even more!
A small part, a bit of time, and a machine saved without breaking the bank!

This one definitely kept us on our toes…

We were called out to an old girl in Harlow, Essex with a pallet-changing system that had been sat untouched for about two months. In that time, a few brave souls had tried to revive her, and bless them, they tried, but she ended up in a full E-Stop meltdown where absolutely nothing would budge. Think: machine equivalent of crossed arms and refusing to speak to anyone. 😅

Once we arrived, it turned into one of those classic domino-effect jobs…
Fix one fault → unlock a brand new fault → fix that → repeat!
Because the machine was so far out of cycle, we had to adjust a mountain of parameters just to persuade her into the right position. Only then could we safely restore everything back to original settings.

Long story short:
This Kitmura Mycentre 2x was rescued, customer happy, and another old girl saved from the scrapyard.
From “ready for retirement” to “back to work like nothing happened.”

Not a bad day at the office! 💪😄

🚐💪 A busy couple of days on this one!

We’ve just finished removing this absolute beast of a spindle, and let’s just say the van definitely wasn’t too happy about it 😅

Always satisfying to see it safely out and ready for repair.

Another job wrapped up!

Today we finished a refurbishment job in Coventry on the ballscrew of a fairly new CMZ machine. A severe lubrication leak had caused the machine to fail, due to premature wear on the ballscrew nut.

We’ve fully refurbished the ballscrew and ballscrew nut, also correcting the lubrication system to make sure this one lasts much longer than the original!

A little preventative service could’ve saved this one 🙊

Using AI to write a status about our jobs is boring…
So here’s a poem instead 🤷‍♂️

Ode to a Spindle Motor

Deep in the heart of the Haas it hums,
Where coolant flows and metal drums,
A spindle spins through work and time,
Precision born of grit and grime.

But today its song was off a beat,
A weary whine, not crisp or neat.
We paused the code, we stopped the run,
Its workday grind was nearly done.

The bearings sighed, the torque grew thin,
A whisper said, “It’s time again.”
So wrenches turned and gauges read,
To bring this motor back from dead.

Soon it’ll spin with steady grace,
Back to its rightful, humming place.
For every part and lathe’s true art—
Depends upon a spindle’s heart.

🚧 Machine Decommissioning & Recommissioning 🚧

This week we visited one of our new customers in Bristol to decommission a grinding machine in preparation for its relocation.

Once safely moved to its new home, we’ll be back next week to recommission the machine. As part of this process, we’ll carry out a full alignment check after accurate leveling, ensuring the machine is running better than ever.

Another step in helping our customers keep their machines performing at their very best. ⚙️
