I've been reflecting recently on what it's like to be a woman working in the commercial energy sector.
It's no secret that it's traditionally been a male-dominated industry, and for many years business relationships have often been built in ways that haven't always felt natural to me.
I'm not the person closing deals on a golf course (although i did enjoy my recent lesson)
Instead, I build my business through conversations, networking, referrals and genuinely getting to know people. I believe trust is earned by listening, understanding the challenges a business is facing, and finding solutions that make a real difference.
Whether I'm helping a hospitality venue reduce overheads, supporting a local retailer, or introducing someone to an additional income opportunity, people matter far more than sales pitches.
Being different hasn't held me back it has become my biggest strength.
As a woman in business, I've learnt that you don't have to fit a traditional mould to succeed. You don't have to be the loudest voice in the room or do business the way everyone else does. You simply have to be authentic, consistent and genuinely care about the people you're helping.
The commercial energy industry is changing, and I think that's a good thing. Diverse perspectives lead to better conversations, stronger relationships and better outcomes for businesses.
I'd love to hear from others working in industries where you've felt like the minority. Has being different become your superpower too?
