Hetton went in to this away game missing 4 players, Tyra Nyazuwa, Amelia Harrold, Freya Kirby and Mia Lawton all missed the trip.

Hetton Juniors U12 Lionesses travelled to Washington today in what proved to be a very competitive and evenly matched game.

The story of the match was shaped by two unfortunate instances that ultimately couldn’t be helped. However, aside from those moments, the Lionesses once again showed how well they are progressing, continuing to put their training into practice during the game.

Hetton were particularly impressive when playing out from the back, showing real composure and confidence in possession.

Amelia stood out once again with an excellent performance in goal, making some important interceptions and distributing the ball superbly to help build attacks from deep.

The team kept working hard throughout the first half, and at the break the message was clear: don’t rush, take a breath, and look for the right pass. Full credit to the girls, as they took this on board and showed great maturity in the second half, settling into their play and using the ball more effectively.
Overall, it was a very even contest.

While Washington posed a threat from corners and throw-ins, they rarely looked like scoring from open play thanks to Hetton’s solid defensive work and organisation.

We nearly found a late breakthrough with Lily, only for the referee to rule it offside. The Hetton VAR official did her best to intervene, but unfortunately without success!

A strong team performance full of effort, learning, and positive football once again from the Lionesses—plenty to be proud of and lots to build on going forward.

Parents Player of the Match: Amelia for outstanding shot stopping and excellent distribution.

Coaches Player of the Match: Harlee who despite taking a ball straight to the face continued battling in defence showing brilliant resilience and distribution from our Goal Kicks

A great game today from the Lionesses, and while the result didn’t go our way, there were soo many positives to take from the performance.

One of the key areas we’ve been working on in training is our goal kicks and building from the back, and it really showed today. The defenders did an excellent job receiving the ball from the goalkeeper, staying composed, and helping us move up the pitch quickly and effectively.

This allowed us to transition into attack much faster and put the opposition under pressure throughout the game.

Amelia was outstanding in goal. Every time she released the ball from her hands, it caused real problems for the opposition and sparked multiple attacking opportunities.

This direct impact was clear as we managed to score twice, with Lily finishing both chances brilliantly.

Credit to the opposition as well — their number 7 was, in our view, one of the strongest players we’ve faced this season and ultimately made the difference. Without her individual performance, the game could easily have gone in our favour.

Despite the defeat, the way we played as a team was extremely encouraging. We saw defenders confidently playing into midfield, midfielders creating space and moving the ball well, and our wide players pushing us higher up the pitch. This resulted in more possession and more shots on target — exactly what we’ve been working towards.

Most importantly, all 12 players who took to the pitch today showed just how far they’ve come. The effort, teamwork, and improvement across the whole squad was clear to see, and every single player should be really proud of themselves.
