Survival for this weather!!!

Control cash flow first (this is survival)

Bad weather doesn’t just stop work — it kills cash flow if you let it.

Do this immediately:
• Pause non-essential spend (new tools, vans, subscriptions, upgrades).
• Chase outstanding invoices early — don’t wait for “normal” terms.
• Reforecast weekly, not monthly. You need to know this Friday, not end of quarter.

To Builders Struggling With the Weather – A Bit of Straight Advice

This weather is brutal. Constant rain, high winds, waterlogged ground — and for a lot of builders it means one thing: no work, no income, and bills still going out.

If you’re trying to keep your business alive through it, here are a few hard-earned tips:

• Don’t force unsafe work – Accidents, failed inspections, and call-backs will cost far more than a delayed job
• Communicate early – Speak to clients before they get frustrated. Most people are reasonable when they understand the risks
• Re-sequence work – Look at what can be done safely: prep, measuring, ordering, planning, snagging, quotes
• Protect cash flow – Chase outstanding payments, pause unnecessary spending, and avoid taking on loss-making work
• Look after your lads – Reduced hours are better than injuries, claims, or losing good workers long-term
• Document everything – Photos, weather records, site notes — protect yourself if disputes arise later

Extreme Rain & Wind – A Bit of Honest Building Advice

With the weather we’re having across Cornwall at the moment, we’ve had a lot of homeowners asking why work has slowed or stopped on site.

The truth is simple: some building work should not be carried out in heavy rain or high winds — and pushing on regardless often causes more problems (and costs) later.

New year, new me? Brilliant.
If you’ve decided to improve part of your life through your property – whether that’s refreshing a room or planning something bigger – you’re already taking a positive step forward.

That said, if you’re not experienced in the construction industry, start small. Smaller projects are the best way to build confidence without unnecessary stress or risk. Each improvement you complete will give you:
• A better understanding of how building work actually unfolds
• Clearer ideas about what you do (and don’t) want
• Confidence to make informed decisions on future projects

Too often, homeowners jump straight into major works without that foundation and end up overwhelmed, over budget, or disappointed with the outcome.

At Builder Opinion, our advice is simple:
build knowledge before you build big. The right guidance at the right time can save you money, stress, and costly mistakes.

If you’re unsure where to start, or whether a project is realistic, that’s exactly when a second opinion helps most.

New year. New plans.
Just make sure they’re built on solid ground.

Hard lessons to be learned.

I am genuinely the biggest clown on this planet. I spent all my savings on my dream house, only to completely wreck it because I thought I knew better than the actual professionals.

Look at my kitchen. Just look at it. I got so obsessed with a specific Pinterest aesthetic that I decided to micromanage the whole thing myself. I bought these cabinets and basically bullied the installer into fitting them exactly how I wanted, even after they warned me the wall couldn’t support the weight and the layout was a disaster waiting to happen. But I wouldn’t budge. I literally said, “It’s my house, I’m paying, do it my way.”

I wanted that perfect social media look so badly that I ignored every ounce of common sense. Funny thing is, Pinterest never mentioned that your entire kitchen might collapse in the middle of the night.

I woke up to a crash that sounded like a bomb going off. My brand-new cabinets were ripped clean off the wall, my expensive dishes were smashed, and there was food and glass everywhere. I tried to be the boss, and now I’m just a girl standing in the wreckage of her own stupidity.

Learn from me. Listen to the experts and maybe log off Pinterest before you ruin your life too.
