At Cleveland Fencing, we’re passionate about more than just strong, secure fencing — we’re committed to protecting the wildlife that shares our spaces. That’s why we’re installing hedgehog holes in as many of our fence lines as possible.
🦔 Why Are Hedgehogs in Decline in the UK?
Hedgehog numbers in the UK have fallen dramatically in recent decades. Studies suggest populations have dropped by 30–75% since the year 2000, with rural areas seeing some of the sharpest declines.
The main reasons include:
🏡 Habitat loss – Gardens have become more enclosed with solid fencing and walls, preventing hedgehogs from roaming.
🚗 Road traffic – Thousands are killed on roads each year.
🌾 Intensive farming – Loss of hedgerows and natural foraging habitats.
🧪 Pesticides – Reduction in insects, their primary food source.
🐕 Garden hazards – Netting, ponds without escape routes, and strimmers can all pose risks.
Modern gardens are often like isolated islands — and hedgehogs need to roam up to a mile a night to find food and mates.
🕳️ Why Are Hedgehog Holes So Important?
A hedgehog hole is a small 13cm x 13cm gap at the base of a fence panel.
This simple addition:
✅ Connects gardens to create safe wildlife corridors
✅ Allows hedgehogs to forage naturally
✅ Increases breeding opportunities
✅ Supports local biodiversity
✅ Costs very little but makes a huge difference
Without access between gardens, hedgehogs can become trapped in fragmented habitats, which reduces survival and breeding success.
