We work UK wide, and for an EPC that is worth more than it sounds.

Run a portfolio across several counties and the usual answer is a different installation contractor in each region. Different standards, different reporting, different people to chase, and a handover pack that looks different every time.

We cover the country with our own crews and our own transport. A site in the south west and a site in the north west are one conversation, one contractor, and one standard of work.

Fewer relationships to manage, and a consistent record across every site in the portfolio.

Once the piles are installed and tested, the mounting structures go on. That may be a single-post or twin-post system, and the choice is not simply cosmetic.

A single-post system uses one pile beneath each support. It generally requires fewer foundations and less steel, and can be easier to install across undulating ground.

A twin-post system uses two piles, creating a stiffer structure that can carry higher loads and suit more exposed sites.

Ground conditions also play an important part. Different geology presents different piling and drivability challenges. Having tested piles on sites across the country, we have built up a strong understanding of those regional differences and how to respond to them.

The final choice depends on the ground, wind loading and panel layout, and needs to be settled before the steel is ordered. Changing the design once the piles are in the ground is far from a small adjustment.

Having the right equipment on site makes a difference. Having your own equipment makes an even bigger one.

Gridfit operates its own specialist plant for solar ground mount projects, including piling rigs, excavators and associated equipment for the groundworks around the installation.

It means we are not relying on hired plant turning up at the right time, and we can respond much more quickly when site conditions or the programme change.

From piling through to the supporting groundworks, our own equipment gives us greater control over how the job is planned, mobilised and delivered.

Photograph a solar farm and you get rows of panels. What you do not see is most of the work.

Access tracks that hold up when a loaded low loader arrives in November. Trenching and cable routes. Fencing. Module assembly. Drainage that stops a site becoming unworkable after a wet fortnight.

None of it photographs well, and all of it decides whether the rest of the job runs to time.

Get the civils wrong and the best piling crew in the country still cannot reach the far end of the site in February.

The least photogenic part of a solar installation, and one of the most consequential.

The GB4 Championship reaches Brands Hatch this weekend for the final round of the season, and Gridfit sponsored Holly Miall is on the grid with KMR Sport.

Brands Hatch gives very little away. Paddock Hill Drop asks for commitment before you can see where you are going, and the circuit has a long history of punishing anyone still working it out on a Sunday afternoon.

It has been a long season, and this is the last chance to bank points.

Our 13mw ground mount project in Yeovil is now complete, with the final rows paneled.

We handled the piling, mounting structure and panel installation with our own teams and plant, giving us control of the job from the first pile right through to the final row.

From Somerset to Lancashire, ground mount solar is what we do.

Foundations are the part of a solar project that is hardest to put right after the event. It is worth being direct with a piling contractor before they are appointed.

👉🏻 Do you own your plant, or hire it? Hired rigs are somebody else's priority. Owned rigs mean the mobilisation date is a commitment rather than a hope.

👉🏻 How do you decide the foundation type? Driven, screw or ballast should follow the ground conditions and the site constraints, not what the contractor happens to have on the yard.

👉🏻 Do you pull test, vertically and laterally? Testing early is cheaper than discovering a foundation problem after the structures are up.

👉🏻 What do we get at handover? Drawings, specifications and a full record of what went in the ground, or a shrug.

Four questions, and the answers tell you most of what you need to know.
