Solar was the single biggest contributor to global energy supply growth in 2025. It accounted for more than 25% of the increase – the first time a modern renewable has led global primary energy growth.

Solar led global energy growth in 2025 as electricity demand surged, driven by EVs and data centers, the IEA says.

🚨 Heating oil costs in rural Derbyshire have more than doubled in just a week 🚨

At Rural Action Derbyshire, we’re warning residents that the rapidly escalating crisis in the Middle East is now driving extreme spikes in domestic heating oil prices. Shipping disruption through the Strait of Hormuz—where tanker movements have dropped by more than 80%—is hitting global supply routes and pushing prices sharply upward.

Across Derbyshire, households relying on heating oil have seen the cost of 500 litres soar from around £300 to £700–£800, with some online suppliers unable to provide any quote at all. Our Oil Buying Scheme supplier, Peak Energy, is continuing deliveries but has had to temporarily cap orders at 500 litres due to demand and market volatility.

Our CEO, Emma Simpson, says:
“People who rely on heating oil are facing a sudden and frightening surge in cost. Many rural households were already struggling, and seeing prices double almost overnight is deeply worrying. For some, deciding whether to order oil right now comes down to whether they can actually afford it.”

We’re urging residents not to panic buy. Prices will fall again, and if you don’t urgently need oil, it’s better to wait.

Our Oil Buying Scheme is still helping members access a more competitive rate. While prices remain volatile, the scheme continues to offer households better value than buying alone — with current member rates at £680 for 500 litres, compared to up to £865 online.

If you want to be part of the community energy movement and find a way to get involved with us, please join DDCE!

You can become a member of DDCE by paying £1.25 for a share in the Community Benefit Society.

You can sign up here https://ddce.org.uk/membership and we ask you to complete some information that will help us involve you in the work we are doing. This may simply be keeping you posted on developments but we are also keen to build our volunteer base and our project teams, so please do let us know via the membership form.

As our projects develop, we will be looking for people in the local community who might sign up to purchase their energy from the local supply; and we will also want to secure funding by offering community shares to people who might be interested in the opportunity to invest in community energy. Let us know if you think you might be interested or would like to learn more!

🏡 What can increase Retrofit in Hard to Treat Old Homes?

Insulating old houses is challenging—especially if you're restricted because your home is in the Peak District National Park, a listed building, etc.

Up to now only a very small number of committed climate pioneers have attempted that.

The HEAT hub project attempted to change that.

📅 Wednesday 25 February, 7:30pm on Zoom

We're greatly privileged to have Miranda Cumberbatch, CEO at Nottingham Energy Partnership (who wrote the grant application for the project), come and tell us:

✨ How successful it was ✨ What it achieved
✨ What lessons were learnt

Is it successful as a model to get retrofit happening on a wider scale than just climate committed pioneers?

Come and find out. Time for questions included. Booking link below. Free to attend.
