Creating a prototype to prove the idea is only the beginning.

One of the biggest misconceptions in product development is the assumption that creating a working prototype means that the hard part is over.

Often, the real engineering begins afterwards:
Can it be assembled repeatedly?
Can it survive transport?
Can it be manufactured consistently?

Mass-market products quickly expose weaknesses. Good engineering earns its value through reliability at scale.

The bicycle is a great example of how great product design can be surprisingly simple. 🚲

No screens.
No apps.
No unnecessary complexity.

Instead, it has decades of engineering refinement to balance weight, strength, comfort, aerodynamics, manufacturability and reliability.

Every angle, material and component has a purpose.

Good design usually feels effortless to the person using it. That’s what makes it good.

Here's a product design tip!

One simple way to improve a product at an early stage is to consider how it will be assembled. Consider not just whether it can be assembled, but also how easy it is to do so repeatedly and correctly.

Are the parts easy to align? Are the fixings accessible? Can components only be assembled one way, or is there room for error?

Small decisions here can have a significant impact later on. On build time, consistency and overall reliability.

It’s much easier to address these issues during the design stage than once production has started.

It’s not the easiest environment in which to work at the moment.

Budgets are tighter. Timelines are shorter. Expectations haven’t really changed and we see this across many of the projects we’re involved in.

So, it feels like a good time to say thank you. Thank you to the clients we work with and the teams we work alongside.

A lot of effort goes into keeping projects moving forward, especially when things aren’t straightforward. This doesn't go unnoticed.

We appreciate the trust placed in us, and the way people continue to approach the work, even when it’s challenging.

At CDT, we specialise in designing medical devices where precision and reliability are paramount.

It's not just about making a concept work once. It's about ensuring consistent performance, proper manufacturing and durability in real-world use.

That’s where most of the hard work lies. If you’re developing a medical device and need help making it robust and buildable, we can assist you.

When you're designing a product, it's useful to think about what could go wrong with it, as well as how it will work.

Every product gets worn out, misused and changes over time. If you design with this in mind, you can avoid small issues turning into big problems later on.

This might mean making adjustments, protecting important parts, or making parts easier to replace. If you think about failure early on, you'll end up with better products that are easier to maintain.

It's often easier to design for these situations at the start than to fix them later.

Much of the weight of products comes from uncertainty.

If you’re unsure how a structure will behave, the standard response is to add more material. Make it thicker. Make it stronger. Just in case.

This approach is effective, but inefficient.

Once you have a proper understanding of the load paths, you can start removing the excess material. You stop designing for 'worst case everywhere' and start designing for what actually happens.

That’s when lightweight design becomes possible.

Not through guesswork. It's through clarity.

Although our work covers a wide range of product types and industries, our underlying approach always remains consistent.

Each project focuses on how a product will perform in real-life use. This includes how it is assembled, how it behaves over time and how it can be reliably manufactured.

Our portfolio reflects this. It includes early-stage concepts, test systems and fully developed products that have been taken through to production.

Looking through our completed projects is often the clearest way to understand how we approach and solve different challenges.

Most products start out as something quite simple. They begin as an idea, a sketch or a rough concept of how something could work.

The process of turning that into a real, working product is where the complexity begins.

This involves making decisions about materials, structure, manufacturing methods and how the product will be used on a daily basis. Each stage builds on the last, so small choices made early on can have a significant impact later on.

We support that process.

From the initial concept to testing and production, our focus is always on ensuring the final product functions as intended in the real world.

If you have an idea you want to develop, it usually starts with a conversation.
